I received a letter a couple of weeks ago saying I will now receive
ODSP benefits.........

I was hoping that I would receive a cheque starting July
1stl....instead......I got my regular OW cheque.

Could someone explain what happens after receiving the initial letter
and how long does it take to transfer over??

i want to thank everyone here for 1. providing this avenue,
and 2. for all the people who take time to answer and help others.

Be very careful about his one... Originally when I was first on ODSP they
took the Social Assistance check that I was not getting and subtracted it
from the ODSP even though I was transferred over... make sure you are
getting the full amount and if not make sure they give you a check to adjust
you to the full amount afterwards... :)

You should be transferred over by the end of July. :)

A letter is usually sent to you to invite you to the ODSP office, where they essentially review the financial period since you applied for ODSP and deduct any welfare and related assistance therefrom, and provide a back pay cheque for the difference.  This takes place on average from two weeks from the time you get your acceptance letter to up to sixty (60) days, depending on the region you are living in.

Oh how I wished this happened to me.  Unfortunately I had to get in contact with the person who runs ODSP in my area and leave a message for them to contact me.  Now how I got their telephone number was by contacting another ODSP office.  Once I talked to them things were straightened out and a check was left at the ODSP office where I had originally been seen.  My first contact told me to keep up on it or they would not even bother to.  What they should of done was check to see if I had received a check from Social Assistance which I had not.  But they did not and just assumed that I had.  In my area those who go on ODSP get cut from Social Assistance immediately. :)

Just an update.......I have an appointment with an ODSP worker on Mon
the 18th.
I would like to add that the time I've spent waiting,........almost a
year...........has caused me not only emotional stress but actual
physical deteriation .......I'm a type 2 diabetic and since there have
been many many days when I've eaten nothing but bread.........once a
month when I would go put my stub in at OW I would stop at McD's and
get a value meal........

It's been so degrading, ........no shampoo..........no inncontinence
pads (wouldn't go out cause I might embarass myself) I've gotten so
that during the winters I don't shave my legs cause I can't afford to
buy razors.........

Then I made the mistake of puting utilites in my name and my room-mate
not paying which I hav e been paying off for the last 4
mnoths...............

I moved to another area in Ontario cause my worker tormented me every
month stopping my check for this reason or than and causing me to have
many nsf checks.........
The day I moved..........I made it to my destination and my car
died.........it's been sitting for almost 2 months cause I don't have
the money to fix it but still paying the insurance.....

The one good thing is that the family already had a Mental Health
worker involved for a few years and I was lucky that I have been added
to her list.........so I have someone to talk with and advocate for
me...........

Thank you all for being here and for all of you who take the time to
help............
