The Times of India Ranchi
Self Help Groups need bank loans to survive'
TNN | May 5, 2014, 12.48 PM IST

HAZARIBAG: Bikram Kumar Das, deputy general manager, Nabard in Ranchi said unless banks provide
loans to women self help groups formed in 18 of the 24 districts in the state, the purpose to
make them self reliant will be defeated.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, he said despite Nabard providing funds through NGOs,
banks are not sanctioning loans to the self help groups. Although these women's bank accounts
are linked to the self help groups, banks have done very little to help them and are not keen
to float a scheme which will aid in poor recoveries of the loan.

He added that the banks will have to take up the responsibility to economically uplift the
rural women. This can only be successful in a poor and backward state like Jharkhand if the
bankers dedicate themselves to working for the poor with a proper plan in mind by creating
awareness.

He said though, two lakhs such groups have been formed in 18 districts of Jharkhand — barring 6
Santhal Paraganas — until now only 20,000 bank accounts were opened and loans were given to
2,700 self help groups in the state. In Hazaribag, 1,700 accounts were opened of which 1,300
are linked to the banks. But he regretted that of the 1,300 groups only 132 groups were given
credit by the banks. He also said in Hazaribag two prominent NGO's like Holy Cross Social
Services Centre and SUPPORT have not only formed 2,700 women self help groups but also are
doing good work to improve the economy of the rural women.

Earlier the DGM NABARD B.K.Das addressed the District Level Sensitization programme on Women
Self Help Groups with the bankers and the NGO's and appealed to them to make the WSHG scheme a
successful like other parts of the country particularly in the southern states. He said that
promoting the WSGS is a Government of India Scheme , bankers should not sit idle but come
forward for making the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) a success. All the leading
Banks including the Zonal manager of the Bank of India, Hazaribag Zone R.K.Mishra, Regional
manager of the SBI participated in the meeting.
