Now when I use the autotype feature, it usually simulates keypresses(can anybody differentiate between the actual keypress and simulated keypress i wonder?). Right !!. When I am supposed to enter text into textfields such as comment boxes or notepad or any other place where I want the autotype feature to simulate text entered in either fields like notes, etc in the Entry Dialog box.

Now when I use the autotype feature using global key or other usual ways, it does starts doing its job. But what if the content entered in the notes field of the entry is too long. It obviously would take time to autotype the whole contents.

More to ask, can I know what is the difference between simulated keypress and actual keypress? I mean in their internal functioning!
When the autotype is finished doing its job, can it be tracked back whether the typed characters were actually typed or simulated.

Glenn, I am using the auto type in notepad. So browser or plugins/extensions are not a big issue here. When I write a para in the notes section of the entry dialog box and then autotype the content in a notepad file/flash file, there is a lag in it. Also it is the same for every computer on which I have worked so far. Paul! what do you think?

This is what I need to type I suppose.
Then when it starts auto typing(I put this text in the notes section and just add the notes section to be printed using NOTES when global or special key for autotype is activated), the characters from '1...9' are typed but in the first >=1 second it is not visible. But as soon as the cursor reaches the next set of "1...9", the previous text appears altogether and so on. That is where is the delay and is more prominent when the autotype is doing its job over large paragraphs.

I can't get the global hotkey to work with anything. It always pops up "Couldn't find an entry that matches the window title". Problem with Edge is that the window title never stays the same, it always has "... and 7 more pages" or something after it. So I have "use entry URL to match..." checked off, but it doesn't seem to care what the URL is, it still fails. Is there any way to make the global autotype hotkey useful?

I always thought that autotype was the less secure option - specifically because it would allow anyone with access to your computer access to all of your accounts. I have KeePass 2 set to automatically lock if my laptop goes to sleep, so I don't have to worry about someone ever getting their hands on my laptop and having access to my email accounts, bank account, reddit account, etc.

Recently though I've been reading that regular copy-paste isn't as safe as autotype because autotype uses Two-Channel Auto-Type Obfuscation, and (as per the KeePass website) "none of the currently available keyloggers or clipboard spies can eavesdrop an obfuscated auto-type process." Does the regular copy-paste function in KeePass do anything to protect against clipboard spies and keyloggers? Or is it just as insecure as copying and pasting content from any old document?

Today I pressed Ctrl+Alt+A to initiate autotype in a Firefox tab for a website.
KeePass entered the wrong KP entry.
I have seen this before in the past very occasionally and I have always assumed it is because I had somehow registered a webpage to autotype against the same entry as another.
Today's though was very strange.

I edited the KP entry for the old website - deleting the autotype target windows.
Still when I went to autotype it gave the wrong entry as an option (but at least now the option box was a point at which I could cancel before the wrong text was plastered across the other site.

i open my firefox, browse to my website, click on the login form and press CTRL+Shift+V (my shortcut set in KeePassXC) and nothing is happening. The same Steps in Chromium are directly running the autotype and login.

And GNOME uses the Wayland display server instead of X11.
I was thinking, the issue may be with Firefox instead of KeePassXC. You did mention that Firefox windows do not show in the list for the autotype configuration. And reading this Firefox may run on X11 by default, which would explain everything.

Just got in to it, looking for our large business and will not move without autotype. We have it currently and no plans to give it up. One place this shines is dealing with remote console VM's that copy/paste do not work with. I just stood up a test account but will be moving on now from this shortsightedness.

Im trying to autotype in VM Console and it doesnt work.
I have already tried it in 1password 7 and it doesnt workg again.
For an application that must be payed that doesnt have this feature its a big step back, because i was using keepass (its free), and has all this features...
Can u please develop this feature in 1password 7 and 8?
Also the Tags in 1Password 8 are always expanded? WHY?

If you are currently on 1Password 7 because the auto-type feature is critical for your workflow, I'd recommend that you stick with that for now - it's still a secure, well-designed, and performant app. We'll continue to keep the improvements coming on 1Password 8, and we'll be announcing any autotype-related news in the forums and at

Fact you guys had a secure service with auto-sync appealed to me. However, without autotype, there's really no point in keeping the service for much longer -- certain sites/services disables pasting intentionally, and, at the same time, has laggy input, making manual typing extremely difficult to pull off with a long password. (Think RDS terminal login with a VPN.)

Hey,
I recently switched from KDE to GNOME (trying things out). In KDE, KeePassXC was configured with a shortcut for autotype and I could use that shortcut to fill in usernames, passwords and also ssh keyfile passwords from the terminal. But now, using GNOME and the GNOME terminal (because it matches the theme...) the shortcut does not work anymore. In every other application it works - just not in the terminal. Probably because the terminal will try to interpret the shortcut in the in the shell?! I tried to create a global shortcut, the problem is that XC doesn't has a command (as far as I know) to initialize AutoType (like normal KeePass). I couldn't find anything helpful on the internet. Does somebody know which setting could help?

The term autotype was coined in the late 19th century and referred to a process for making photographic prints using a carbon process. Many autotype prints were produced and the process was popular well into the 20th century, particularly since autotype prints are very long lasting (it is said that an autotype could last up to 500 years without fading).

Autotype may also refer to halftone printing. The term may also apply to the Autotype Company, founded in London in 1868 as the "Autotype Fine Art Company", which was one of the pioneers in the carbon print and autotype reproduction process and which still exists as a supplier of coated films.[1] Autotype is now part of the Platform Speciality Products group of companies.

The KeepassXC autotype function only allows me to call "ENTER", but this actually triggers the Return key. In addition to the Return key in also need to be able to specifically call the Enter key next to the num block.

I'm trying to use an idea idea I saw on here but can't seem to find at the moment, to "autotype" text (letter by letter, rpg dialogue style). There's a version in the GDevelop examples, but this is a bit less complex, and tweaked so you can skip the autotype if you want.

A benefit to password managers, at least some of them, is that they can look at the URL and only use autotype/autofill when on the correct site, which can help prevent pharming since if instead of you go to examp1e dot com it won't autofill your credentials. What I want to know, and can't find anywhere, is whether DNS hijacking or poisoning, when taking you to a different site, will show to the browser, the user, and the password manager as the site you meant to go to or the fake one. That is, if you actually type example.com, and the browser thinks you're going to example.com because it's following the malicious DNS to maliciouswebsite dot com, does it show where it thinks you are or is it somehow able to resolve the actual URL and show that? I realize this is a very unlikely possibility, but I'm curious if the password manager would try to autofill on the malicious site because instead of example.com being resolved as x.x.x.x it's resolved as y.y.y.y, but as far as the browser and password manager know it's still example.com, or if it would go to y.y.y.y but since the actual URL for that is maliciouswebsite dot com that's what would ultimately be shown.

An autotype is a secret communication device used by the Allies during World War II. It transmits and receives a fluctuating electromagnetic frequency that cannot be intercepted. It was invented by Nikola Tesla.

Example 2: The following, sent in by a user, clears the username field before username and passwordautotype begins. Non-empty username fields are very common. Some sites remember the username even when the user does not want it to or user forgets to clear the don't remember username and, because of browser cookies, it is remembered anyway, or if login fails for whatever reason on the first attempt the username would still remain. This autotype sequence is meant to ensure that the user doesn't have to clear the username field first.\t\s\u\t\p\n

A possible alternative: At the moment you can configure what happens when a credential is double-clicked. Could an option be added to run a key sequence (that uses the 'this' keyword to autotype) when any credential is double-clicked? I realise that would kind of 'lock in' that behaviour for all credentials for the user though. Could possibly add an override option to the credential properties? Starts to get messy I guess?

autotype is a LuaLaTeX package for automatic language-specific typography. Currently, it supports ligature suppression at word boundaries, long s insertion for blackletter typesetting, and weighted hyphenation, but only for German (old and new orthography).
