The Oceanside Century is on tomorrow with the following Registered Riders:

Steve Loughran who wrote: “I'm thinking about doing this.  Have to check with the boss regarding plans that day??  BTW, the first water stop Carl's is really not open for ice and water.  I ride this route frequently from home and make the turn around to go home right there.  Most of this is closed in terms of the water/cola dispenser.  There is a small coffee shop next door but is rather small so not sure they would welcome a larger group but there is a bathroom in the back.  Since you are riding the bike route through San Clemente, you bypass all the businesses along the way.  I do this as well.  Not sure where you would get water before San Onofre, but they have many bathrooms along the way in the State Park.”

One option is to ask the employees at the front of Carl’s to fill your water bottles for you.  Another option is fill your water bottles from the water in the Restrooms in the sink.  Another option is to stop next door at Café Del Sol for Water and Restrooms which is the coffee shop that Steve is referring to.  Another option is to bring a Camelbak and ride down to the McDonald’s turnaround at mile 52 without stopping in San Clemente..

Larry Locken who wrote: “I will be there for at least part of it.  I haven’t ridden over 60 miles in over a year.  I want to at least make it to Las Pulgus.  I created a calendar event on the OCW Website for this ride.  I will also be creating a RidewithGPS map for the route and posting it on the webpage tonight if anyone wants to download the route to their Garmin or Wahoo.  See you Saturday.  It’s been way to long.”

Larry also wrote: “I have created a RidewithGPS map for this ride where you can download a TCS or GPX file for your bike computer.  I put the link in the calendar entry for this ride.  Here is the link if you want to put it into your email for the ride.  All my routes are public so you should not have a problem viewing them.

Oceanside Century

Saturday, June 12, 7:30 A.M.

105 Miles with 4,400 Feet of Climbing

We’ve been in Solitary Confinement for way too long!!  😊

How about a nice and easy Oceanside Century on Saturday?

Weather.com at Lake Forest at http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/l/USCA0581:1:US is forecasting 60 – 85 with Mostly Sun on Saturday so it should be a great day for a ride down to Oceanside.

In order to ride through Camp Pendleton Marine Corp. Base, you’ll need a DBIDS Recreational Bicyclist pass/credential which is explained at

https://www.pendleton.marines.mil/Base-Access/Recreational-Bicycling/

Note that if you have an old California Driver’s License marked “Not Valid for Federal Purposes”, they will not issue you a pass.  You need a new California Driver’s License called a REAL ID as shown at https://realid.dmv.ca.gov/

If you don’t have one, you can follow this route down to Las Pulgas then turn around and still have a good 88 mile ride.

Bring a mask in case you need one to enter a facility on the course that requires it.

Let me know if you are coming to this century by replying to this e-mail. If there isn't enough interest in this ride, I may cancel it by announcing the cancellation on this e-mail list on Friday.

The Route Slip for the Oceanside Century for this coming Saturday is at

http://www.caltriplecrown.com/centuries/OceansideCentury.xls

and printed copies will be available at the start of the ride.

My Strava Report from 9/10/16 on this route is at https://www.strava.com/activities/707691105

This route has one official distance of 105 miles. It is an out and back course so it can be cut short if necessary by turning around at the first Water Stop at mile 33 for example turning it into about 66 miles. Or you name it ... you can turn around whenever you need so come join us whether you want to ride 25, 50, 75, or 100 miles ... or anything in between.

The route sheet reflects the following changes:

- Uses the bike route through San Clemente instead of PCH. This is a good idea since it avoids all of the traffic on PCH.

- First Water Stop is the Carl’s Jr. at the end of town in San Clemente which is a good idea since Carl’s has good Ice, Water and Restrooms.

- The lunch stop is the new(er) McDonalds near the big PX complex just before the main guard gate in Oceanside.

This ride will start at “The Square” (formerly Foodpark) in Irvine at Main and MacArthur at 7:30 A.M. sharp so you should arrive by 7:15 A.M. Main and MacArthur is near the intersection of the San Diego Freeway (405) and the Newport (55) Freeway. Take the MacArthur Blvd. exit from the San Diego (405) Freeway and turn North ... Main Street is the first street Northeast of the 405 Freeway. Meet in the Parking Lot behind the Starbucks.

I did this route a lot last summer and topped off the water bottles in Doheny State Park and it lasted me into San Onofre. This worked well.
