OUR NEXT TRAIL BLAZER EVENT IS DECEMBER 11-13
JOSHUA TREE CAMPOUT-METEOR SHOWER-HIKE TO SECRET CASTLE


We are saying on the south side of the park. Head east of Indio on
I-10 about 24 miles, then into the park about 8 miles.Cottonwood
Campground (group site 1 has been reserved) . Should be fabulous
weather during the day, but cold at night.

This December weekend is the Geminid Meteor Shower, the most reliable
meteor shower of the year and coincides with the darker nights skies
of the new moon. Frequency should have about one per minute.

For Saturday, the Secret Castle is a moderate to difficult hike, but
can be done with kids age 10 and older. This hike is not listed in
the guide books because of its remoteness and to protect its unique
historical interest. The castle is a rock house built into the side
of a boulder outcrop by a prospector at his mine site. The hike is 9
miles round trip, has 1400 ft of elevation gain, and will take about 6
hours. For those who find this hike too much of a challenge, there
are many other easier hikes near the camp ground.

There will be no cost for this trip other than shared food preparation/
responsibilities.

Each year one of the best attended events is our annual Big Bear Ski Trip. This usually involves renting a nice house near the hills, pizza the night before, skiing all day Saturday, a great Italian dinner on Saturday night and Sunday is usually a quiet day of skiing or a quick drive home. For some reason the boys have a great time running around the house and behaving like boys!!! This is Super Bowl weekend.

 

In order to determine the accommodation needs we need an " fairly firm indication"  from you  of if you will be attending. Based on this we will rent accommodations.

 

Typically we have charged $125 per person for the accommodations and dinner Saturday night.

 

Please advise me ASAP if you will be attending.

On Sunday, January 17th, the OC Trailblazers will take to the track and race the fastest indoor go-karts in Southern California at K1 Speed in Irvine.

We have the room reserved from 2 PM to 4 PM Sunday afternoon and we are scheduled for the Grand Prix Race package. The racers will be performing a 12 Lap Practice run, a 14 Lap Qualifier for Pole Position, then a 16 Lap Final Race for trophies.

Cost is $55 per person, but I understand that it is WELL worth it.

Please do let me know if you are interested in going. I would like to have all confirmations and collect the funds by Friday, January 9th.

What time of the morning do you view the meteor shower? I understand that
the best viewing is around 3-5 AM as that is the time our side of the world
is "on the crest" of sunrise and reflects the meteors better? Also, do you
use any special viewing mechanisms (binoculars)?

The forecast for the entire next week is rain (M-F). That coupled with the winter cold could make the star gazing an icey and perhaps an overcast experience (no stars). Forecast temperatures are a high of 59 and low of 35, which would be fine if it were dry. I am considering cancelling the joshua tree trip unless there are real die-hards out there. If you RSVP'd let me know your preference - rough it out - or reschedule for spring. If I do not hear from anyone on monday I will cancel reservation or reschedule if we stand to lose deposit.

Peter and I vote for rescheduling for the Spring. We also have a my son's first birthday on Sunday, so rescheduling will allow us to hang the streamers and set up the bounce house! ~whoopee!~

I would be fine with cold but not with cold and wet. We just have our 20F
bags and would probably not be adequately outfitted if we get cold rain/snow
(is that possible out there?). While I would love to see the meteors, the
bigger draw for me was Secret Castle. Long answer to a short question: if
the weather is as expected Taavi and I would prefer to wait until spring.

family! Coming up quickly is our planned ski weekend in Big Bear over
superbowl weekend. This event requires firm numbers so we can rent a
cabin to hold all who want to go. Please send your firm RSVP to Al
Maguire thru the list and send him a non-refundable deposit of $125
per person to hold your spots. The deposit will pay for the cabin,
Saturday breakfast and dinner. Cabin reservations will be made with
your RSVP - so this deposit is nonrefundable unless you find someone
to take your spot and you get the money from them. Bring you deposit
to K1 Speed or mail it to Al Maguire this week. A reservation will be
made next week on Tuesday. Straggles will sleep on the floor. The
true cost of the event will be determined in the days leading up to
the event, but $125 was the cost from last year. This is a very fun
event and the snow so far this season has been pretty good (about 3
feet - about half man made). January should bring at least one good
dump of fresh powder.
