rake generate breaks sitemap generation

Running rake generate, I get a path error (have added gem: -jekyll-sitemap to _config file and also Gemfile)

$ rake generate

## Generating Site with Jekyll

identical source/stylesheets/screen.css 

Configuration file: /Users/xxxx/octopress/_config.yml

            Source: source

       Destination: public

      Generating... 

Error reading file /Users/xxxx/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p392/gems/jekyll-sitemap-0.6.1/lib/sitemap.xml: No such file or directory - /Users/xxxx/octopress/source/Users/xxxx/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p392/gems/jekyll-sitemap-0.6.1/lib/sitemap.xml 

                    done.

Any idea what causes this?  Only sitemap generation breaks.

The sitemap.xml should still be in your public/*, is that true?

It never got generated I don't think.  Followed instructions on octopress.org to a t.
