Hi All,
I’m happy to announce that the Athens Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will take place on Saturday, December 20th. The CBC is an annual effort to conduct a complete census of the birds within our 15-mile-diameter count circle, which is divided into sectors. You can read more about the history and importance of the Christmas Bird Count here: https://oconeeriversaudubon.org/news/f/counting-for-conservation-the-christmas-bird-count
We need your help this year! Volunteers are welcome in the following roles:
Sector Leaders: Several of our regular leaders are unable to attend this year, and we are looking for experienced birders who are willing to take charge of a sector.
General Participants: Birders of all skill levels are encouraged to join a sector route. Counting together improves both the accuracy of the results and the fun of the day.
Feeder Counters: Anyone who lives within the count circle can participate from home by counting birds visiting their feeders. Click here for Feeder Watching Guidance.
We are a bit short-handed this year, so your participation is especially appreciated. If you'd like to volunteer, please contact Eugenia Thompson (erobe...@gmail.com).
In addition to the count day itself, we are also interested in any rare birds found within the circle during count week (December 17–23). Species seen during this window but not on count day receive a special notation. Please report any species observed during count week that are atypical for Athens in December.
Thank you all, and we hope you’ll join us for this year’s
count!
Cheers,
David Tilson
President, Oconee Rivers Audubon Society
