Hi all

Anyone interested in paddling the upper section of the taieri this saturday.
Looking at doing the run from Tiroiti to Hyde. This is a simple grade two,
current flow is 30cumes so should be good run. Can combine with cycle ride
back to cars on the rail trail.
Will be heading up on saturday morning & back that afternoon.

Let me know if keen

Hi All

Just a reminder there is a club trip to the skippers (upper shotover G2+) in
December. This is one of the best runs in Otago and a neat place just to
hangout or explore. Currently planned for the 4th and 5th however those that
can are welcome to join us & leave early on Friday thus getting 3 days on
the river. Also may look at doing the Dog leg section on the way home (G3).

Please advise early if interested, If the forecast is bad we will look at
shifting to the following weekend?

I'm Keen on Taieri. but the usual meeting time of 10 on Saturday wont suit as I have patients in the clinic until 11am.

I could head out at 11 and meet you all at the get in by about 11.20 if that's ok. so maybe meet at Outram glenn at 10.30?

Also The Southland canoe Club is running Beaumont on the Saturday.  not sure on the flow at the mo but its a boily gd 2 From memory, I dont have Graham Charles Book at work to check. i have spoken to MikeClark the president and while he is not going he said other paddler are welcome. They are meeting at the Beaumont Bridge at 10.30 saturday so there is another option for anyone wanting an easier trip

Hi All

Final reminder for the Clutha trip this Sunday 20th Nov

Beaumont Day trip G2.
For those that have not gotten wet yet, this is a good way to kick the
season off. So come & join me on the Clutha river at Beaumont for a day trip
this Sunday the 20th Nov.
Plan is to meet at the Concord Inn at 8:15 am car pool and leave at 8:30am.
Travel to Beaumont & run the lower section which is a grade 2 section on a
high volume river. This section is suitable for experienced beginners and
the more experienced paddlers as you can always test your self in the whirl
pools & boils. If time permits we will attempt to run it twice. As this
gives you a second chance to catch those waves that you missed first time
round.

Partners or friends may wish to come along and bike the Millium track which
runs along side the river.

Russell - hi there,

I'm one of the sea kayakers of the club (we met last Friday at Sue's) but am currently undertaking research on the Clutha (recreation funnily enough) for my PhD. I was planning to do some observation work down around Balclutha this weekend but it's occurred to me that your trip would be a good opportunity to 'catch' people in action on the river. Would you mind if I followed your group down the river (I'll be biking as I'm not brave enough to paddle on the river), taking some photos and having a few chats - just normal social stuff really - ?

If you think it would be ok, then I'm happy to give a lift to anyone who needs it (I'll have the bike rack on the back plus I always carry a set of cradles on top) and can take a couple of people comfortably (I have a Rav like Maggie). I'm not familiar with the Concord Inn so a road name would be good so I can find it - cheers.

Out of interest, where do you normally put in on the Clutha and do you come out by the bridge at Beaumont?

Cheers Russell,

Andrea.

This a one of the best rivers in Otago to paddle it is a G2 to G2+ so good
for intermediate grade paddlers. If you happy on G2 then you should be fine

Hi All

There is a group of paddlers from the WWCC (Christchurch Club) coming down to paddle the upper skippers and quite likely a few other runs in the central area.

The plan is to meet in Arrow town on Boxing day around 4pm and driving in around 5pm
See below for original email

I done a 10 day Otago / Southland trip with this group approx 4 years ago which was great and a good bunch of people to paddle with. So Im planning on joining them again this time. They are happy for members of our club to join them so if any other club member wished to come along then that should be fine. You will need to have the appropriate gear and skills to run a grade to 2 to 2+ river. No plans are in place for after the skippers but it is likely that a few of use will run Dogleg, Roaring meg and maybe other local runs.

If your keen please register your interest via return email
or call me on 03 487 7178

Russell

The deal is:

GETTING THERE:

Meet in Arrowtown (or some convenient place we will decide upon ASAP) at around 4 pm on Boxing Day. (Email me if this poses problems. Actually, email me if it works for you as well). Then, we all go in a grand caravan to the Upper Shotover leaving NO LATER than 5 pm. For those who have never been there, Skippers Canyon Road is much scarier than the river, so it is best to go in a group. This way we don't each of us have to negotiate right of way with oncoming traffic on this mostly single-lane dirt road with a very large drop off on one side (see attached photo).

You will need to buy all groceries and other goodies BEFORE we journey in there, and you should have a camp stove or be willing to eat a lot of cold canned soup. Camping is at Skippers point, which has a few historic buildings from goldmining days (see other attached photo).

THE RIVER:

The Upper Shotover is grade II+, and none of you should have any trouble with it. The appeal is the scenery and the constant surf waves. Beginners take note: surfing is a great skill builder and way fun!

It will be, however, a long day out. Pack a lunch in your drybag. While this is not a hard river, it is difficult, and in many places near impossible to walk out. Therefore, I will expect we have at LEAST one split paddle for every two people, throwbags if you have them and adequate food. Also, beginners and anyone else who may take a few swims will be required to pack a set of dry clothes in their drybag. (NOTE: I had a big overnight epic not long ago on the North Island which was exacerbated by all of us not having enough food, gear or clothing despite the fact we all should have known better. I WILL NOT make that mistake again, and anyone without adequate kit will be driving shuttle.)

Since getting there is such a hassle, my plan is to spend three days paddling this river. From there, we can decide what we want to do. At this point, I am not 100% sure how much time I can stay, and anyway, it will depend on the group's skill level, etc. etc. That can all be discussed. My main goal is to get back to this river, which is probably my favourite in New Zealand. I hope you will love it too
!

Hi All

A quick update.

The first club trip for the season to skippers is coming up on the 1 & 2
Dec. The upper skippers is with out doubt the best grade 2 to 2+ river in
otago if not NZ. So well worth making the effort to come along and enjoy.
Plus there are other activities in the area such as exploring the area on
foot or MTB, so plenty of options for the non - paddler.

We normally camp at the DOC camp spot at the old school house thus have
access to flush toilets & running water, This is situated across the
skippers bridge and up the hill.
I was there a week ago and the road has been repaired and is in very good
condition, the river was at one of the best flows I have had so lots of fun.
Yet again we only left the last play hole when our arms could no longer
raise the paddle :-)

There are two options.

Option 1: For those that can get Friday of work, a group of will travel up
on Friday morning and paddle the upper shotover Friday afternoon, and again
on n Saturday & depending on what people want to do a group may look at
paddling dogleg or Meg on the Kawarau.

Option 2 for those that leave town Friday evening or early Saturday, join us
on the Upper shotover on Saturday (plan to be at the put in by 11am at the
latest) and Sunday with the option of the Kawarau if that happens.
