Ok I tried a quick benchmark (not yet with any Profileing); and it seems WSL is not actually that much faster here.

I also have a vague feeling I have been able to run servers on localhost and access them from windows, but not sure about this and not at that computer right now. A quick google seems to claim this is how windows/wsl should work
Game changer for me was to install LocalWP on a program called RamDisk by Dataram, which creates a virtual drive on the RAM. It. is. so. much. faster. There were some security issues to work through (like the hosts file needing to be excluded in Windows Virus Protection), but it solved all speed issues on Windows and LocalWP finally works like a dream.

I have isolated the issue. The issue is for the most part related to the "START PAGE" in allegro. If the start page is enabled as it is by default display performance is pretty close to the performance that exists in 17.2. It is really close but still not as fast. I would say probably it is 80% or so of 17.2's speed performance and on newer HW most users would probably not notice this.
