Here is a revised letter to the board - please review and either give me
suggested changes - - and a revised synopsis..same deal..let me know
what to add/change.

I set them so anyone with the link can access and I think edit/comment -
so have at it..

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HNlsHpD5V1Rhpb0SbVEQdv3iw5znOh9aRPaIbnvtdxs/edit

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ETc_KKPI6avKccU1yXCrHvZ0Pcv1ixPn0IK63PO4Jy0/edit

Once cleared - and after the board has seen them via charlie forwarding
it to the board - I will post to the discuss list and ffn..and fully
release this to the membership - unless there is some objection to that
happening.

I went ahead and adjusted the synopsis..to make the station a project of
the fair - so after a possible ask for start up funds (loan) to pay for
an engineer - it will be off the ocf books - we will pay the admin fee
for them to be the fiscal agent (suggest 5% of all pass through
funds)..and that's it..

That should immediately silence all concerns in that finances/operations.

Re the need for additional information needed by the committee - there
will always be more questions to ask - so if the information already on
the google site/docs - information used many times to put many stations
on the air - is not sufficient - please contact me directly and I will
try to provide the specific, detailed info you need.

While October 15 may seem like a long way off - it is not at all...as in
that time we need to initiate a lot of contacts to solicit general as
well as financial support...and then have the next 2 years to close
those deals.

If any can not access the docs on google - let me know.

I just looked at it initially and WOW! You have really put a lot of time and thought into this project. It is much appreciated. This is a project that could enrich the listening lives of many thousands of people.

I can't speak to the financials, as I'm not familiar with the start-up costs or hidden costs of a radio station.

I think you also need to mention that if the fair applies for, and is granted a license, but never launches, there is no fee. I think that is the main hole I see.

My main feedback will be in the form of typos/edits. I can't access the documents to edit directly, but I'm attaching them edited. Obviously, they aren't content edits. So if anyone else has feedback in that area, check spelling.  :-)

.....as I'm having a bit of fun - re ownership of low power fm radios - you all now have access to a doc I got a year or 2 ago - showing ownership of every non commercial station in the country......don't ask..just read it and deny knowing where you got it!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgH2RlE6ghPcdEIxTTZiWU8xNDRBU3RSV2JTYWQyQVE

This should cause anyone able to connect the dots to sit up and realize the fcc's decision this morning will have huge ramifications we can not imagine....the playing field is soon to be leveled - as communities and festivals, and neighborhoods and you name it realize they can have their own media and network with others and no longer be dependent on a media that only sees them as audience share to be sold as a commodity to an advertiser....

SOMEHOW - we must hack our way through the weeds, and the nay sayers, and control freaks and trust ourselves and our community to do no harm - but rather to really take control of our airwaves.

We own/control  that property - why not have some control/stewardship of the airwaves just above the dirt?!

--------------------------

There really aren't any hidden costs!

Sure - we can charge for time spent writing emails(!) - but if starting on a small/simple/appropriate level and letting it all evolve organically - nothing need be hidden.

yes - we would keep a petty cash/slush fund - of course - to cover operational issues of things breaking, or travel or whatever - and would need to be able to ask for loans from the fair now and then - but it really is as simple as it looks -  - there isn't much to see under the rocks.

---------------

Good point on the fact that there is no cancellation penalty - I have never known of a successful applicant to walk away - but I guess it could happen.

-----------

Will incorporate changes - run spell check a few times - and let all review the finals before sending it to charlie - ideally by monday?

Can someone please add Sandra to this list - and Robin (in the town office)  as well..I don't have her email...but she very much wants to be engaged/involved.

Hello Jim and all,

Looking over the pick list for the studio I have a few additions and comments.

I have a console (fostex 454) that I will lend (at no charge) on a permanent basis. There is no need for a stand alone phantom power source as all consoles supply phantom power. The console your recommending has phantom power. The console I will lend has phantom power. We will wire the studio to supply phantom power to all mic inserts, which will be mounted in the walls of the studio and available in the control booth.

In my experience one turntable is plenty, given the rarity of vinyl these days and the fact that you can cut to a cd or digital file. Cuing 2 records is not necessary and the turntables take an enormous amount of space for an item that is used so rarely.

I would not use or recommend behringer products.

Instead of turntable preamps a stanton dj mixer, which includes turntable pre's can be purchased for about $60 dollars used. There is your turntable preamps plus a mixer anyone can understand. The Stanton's have turntable, mic and line (cd players etc) inputs as well as two headphone outs, mains, booth and monitor outs, etc. I have used the Stanton's as club mixers and in radio stations, professionally and found them to be very acceptable (same as their CD decks). I recommend the dj mixer in addition to the full fledged mixer that I will supply.

Alesis M1 self powered monitor speakers are a tremendous bargain, Highly recommended, I've produced much great music with them and they are very inexpensive (appr $ 150 a pair used, each one contains woofer, tweeter, two amplifiers and a powered crossover in a tuned enclosure, whats not to love?).

I am available with my knowledge and industry connections to aid in acquiring the gear, when the time comes.

In addition, shipping can be expensive and I would include $200 for Shipping and Handling in the budget.

I agree with Michael here. I think a lot has to be done on the scrounge for hardware. I really thank him for his offers.

I can provide  a commercial CD player and a choice of commercial DAT decks (Panasonic, Otari, Teac) if needed.

A location on the Fair site for the equipment and radio production may show up in a month or two. I have my fingers crossed. Am working on it.

Spend the money on getting good microphones..... something else missing is cables...a budget for that may need to be included.

I agree on not getting Behringer products. One can do much better. The Alesis M1s are winners. One turntable is enough. etc.

Thank You

Let me totally echo what Paxton said - it is WAY cool that you are around!

Scounging is going to be the only way to go.

The big ticket items such as the transmitter(s) and antennae are going to be tricky - but I see used ones come up for sale in the trade magazines, and with close to 3 years to a live mic (for broadcast - sooner for web) we'll be fine.

Am wondering if you have the energy/inclination to take the lead on this equipment business - to go through the items on the list and replace/refine what we need, might have access to  and so forth - and attach dollar amounts - to make our eventual presentation to the board - and then our long term ops - complete.

You know this stuff inside and out - just made sense to ask.

Jim

Hello Jim, Paxton etc.

I can and will take charge of the studio pick list. I will go through the studio pick list today and post results soon (tonight or tomorrow morning). I would also be enthusiastic about engineering, building and running the studio and internet streaming portions of this project. With some forethought this studio could be geared towards any type of audio production and easily expanded to include video production. These capabilities could be engineered in at no additional initial expense.

Streaming over the internet is going to be a constant expense that has not been addressed yet. Give me a rough idea of how many people may be tuned in to the internet stream at any one time and I can do the preliminary brokering of that service to give us a ballpark figure of our expenses in that area.

Please note that I am not well versed in RF ( Radio Frequency) technology. The RF portion of this project (transmitters antennae etc) could and should be separated from the studio project.

I think we should try to find a volunteer from the fair family membership that is an FCC certified RF tech. Transmitters, antennae etc need constant maintenance, thus we need a qualified local tech on call to handle that. The Prometheus project might also be a good source for a dedicated volunteer. I would think that whoever we get should be based in the Venita / Eugene area.

Please note that my offer of equipment etc. to set up a "for the fair" studio this year is separate from our longer term goals, I own all the necessary equipment and that project would cost the fair nothing. I would need help from existing IT staff (one person, for an hour) to help set up my computer for streaming on the OCF network.

For future reference, I am also capable of producing programing in my studio in the Rogue Valley, thus fair family down here could produce programing for the station without leaving the valley. I would also be happy to teach classes and aid individual fair family members that wanted to set up their own satellite studios. Programing could be juried and approved by studio staff before being aired.

too excellent!

would you mind literally attaching dollar amounts to the stuff that has value, but which you are either willing to lend or we know we can score on the scrounge?

it is for accounting purposes...so we can show..'lookie here - we got this and this and this already donated - so will you help us too?'

then we can stash it on the goog docs and give everyone easy access to it there..

provided this actually comes together with board endorsement, member involvement  and minimal snaggage - you may find yourself with a lot more people who have access to a LOT more gear!..so even adding in a wish list may make sense..so as this evolves, you guys can figure out what you need/want/scored...

On a different track - the organizational - I offer for your dining and dancing pleasure -  - the oregon non profit application form - probably what we will want to become to enable us to be umbrellaed by the fair - it's just forming a state non profit (NOT federal!) - but gives us the corporate cover so we are one step more than individuals, will be able to handle and transfer money - write checks, etc -  but have not slipped entirely into the darkness.

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BwH2RlE6ghPcSzBuaU5nUHBnS0k

Happy reading.

Also - anyone who really wants to learn about non profits - differences in what they are and so forth - I've got a book I wrote on the topic (actually 2 - but am just talking the latest) - will send it as a pdf to fair folks - - just ask me off list...or you can go to amazon and buy it as a hard copy or ebook and read it on your readers.

I don't get anything on sales - really just want the information out there.
