Hi all,

I just got back from the BOD retreat and have some non news. The radio station did not get mentioned among the group at all. Neither charlie or I got a chance to make a presentation....the weekend was so filled.

With the upcoming Craft lot Expansion, new camping areas, parking lot and traffic changes, zoning considerations, Community center and the upland kitchen taking much of our time a lot fell by the wayside. Peach Power besides the radio station did not even get mentioned.

These are also going to incur some substantial infrastructure costs so the budget is looking stressed. We will have some better figures soon but there won't be much money for extraineous projects. I think we are going to be moving fast these next two years.

I did get to talk with Charlie about the radio station for a couple of minutes.

I don't think the fair is going to do much funding. We can provide a conduit for grants ( a $1000 or 2 for startup costs may be possible.)

The community partnerships will be what makes the project possible.

More later, I am tired. It was a long weekend.

Peaches,
Paxton

Prometheus folks are really good people - I first met a handful of them during the WTO Ministerial in Seattle in '99 - and got to work more closely with them a year or so later when I was working on a fairly large media conference  - also in Seattle -

Thing to remember is they are great at providing the background support - getting the general knowledge out to communities - but that is where they have to stop and let the individual communities figure out how to make it work within their unique situations.

Best to think of them as a terrific resource we may or may not need to actually consult. We are light years ahead of many communities, so should be able to get the app in with minimal direct assistance.

Charlie is fully and completely supportive - but as he told me - is also swamped  - so needs us to provide him with the needed information to take to both fair and community people...he has not the time to do the level of research needed to make this happen.

No idea who is on the list - I think there is a query option on the site.

As for who on the bod is interested - i don't know as I have not as yet presented it to or polled anyone.

Charlie will be bringing it to the retreat this weekend - so I expect some sort of report back in a  few days...but with his full support and endorsement, it should at the very least get a fair and full hearing.

The task now will be to prepare a full proposal for board review -  leapfroging a bit to further the research - even as the bod considers it...not the best of scenarios, but the one we must deal with.

Bummer. Can't say I'm super surprised though.

Thank you for the update, Paxton.

Hello Jennifer, Paxton, et all,

I have and could bring all the gear and expertise necesary to install and operate a station that would broadcast on the OCF Lan and/or WWW and/or be transmitted via RF.

If we want to transmit on RF then someone else will have to supply the transmitter and RF expertise.

I would need a secure building to put many thousands of dollars of equipment in, one with limited and controlled access. I would need responsive contact with the people that control the install space and the people that run the OCF Lan. The building must have adequate electricity and Lan access. I would need programers that could assemble talent. I could use help with production and engineering.

By myself, I could produce and engineer several programs a day. If others want to volunteer for production/engineering I would need to start vetting them very soon.

We could send these programs out on the OCF Lan live, record them and archive them on a website that I could design. The website would allow access to both the live feed and archived material. Anyone with any access to OCF Lan (onsite wireless internet access) could listen in. That's every IPhone, IPad, IPod, Kindle, Laptop, Kaypro, or COCO II.

I would imagine we could be transmitting 2 or 3 weeks before the fair and continue for several days after.

I would provide all the equipment, engineering and production at no charge.

We could use this as proof of value for this project as a permanent installation.

We could have a barrel of fun.

Bummer?..Naw...not at all..!

Our immediate need is not 20K for a fully outfitted studio - in fact I would think the board to be nuts if they simply authorized such without knowing wtf is going on.

Our immediate need will be to get an application in by next June - which simply begins the 2 year clock (give the FCC  6 months to make determinations and another 36 months to tower certification) - and for that application - we will need - - yup...$1-2K - if that!

SO, our immediate need remains the same - getting a good time line in place and the the board to agree to use of the OCF name for development/fundraising purposes - using whatever grown up language is needed to satisfy the concerns that will come along.

Once we release this to the fair community and get a little buzz going - things will change - - and once the release dates are made public by the FCC and this becomes front page news in the corporate media (which it will) - I believe attitudes are going to change dramatically and rather than trying to avoid making any sort of commitment,  the struggle will become one of who gets to lead the parade down main street.

Between application and FCC decision, we have at least one bod election -

Let's have some fun!

What you are suggesting might be the ideal prototype - to show the fair community  - including our potential partners (school district, city, neighboring businesses, etc) what is really possible...

As the current spec time line has the fair happening after the application date - but well before any real financial outlay might be needed - the timing of such a prototype could not be more ideal.

My suggestion is to suggest you develop  what you're describing here in lay terms - assume the reader knows absolutely nothing more than how to plug in a radio or computer - no RF, or LAN talk(!) - - and re your gear, as we discussed  before - attach a dollar amount to it - even if you are willing to loan the equip to the fair - the board and community will need to see a dollar amount to be taken seriously.

Before any access is given to the fair website - the bod will need to approve much of this in general principle -  - a process we need to expedite by crafting - yes - that timeline and a clear description of what we want to do for the fair community to ultimately get more people to the table.

We can always submit articles to the ffn - which should be our immediate conduit - and from there explore other options to get the membership up to speed so the board and membership are pulling together.

Thoughts?

Hi Michael and all,

I too have equipment that we could use, although not as much as Michael.

Secure space is a problem, at least until  we build the Community Center...a couple of years away.

The only space we have now is Zen House which is infused with Cat Urine and most people consider not usable. It is used for storage at the moment. It is lockable and a couple of visiting photographers did get to use it as a base for last year's fair. I can push to get space there but......

There is no space in the Warebarn or hub that is secure, currently. I do have lockable space during the fair for Photo ID in the warebarn but I can't get in till Monday before the fair and have to be out by Wednesday afterwards. It is not really usable for Radio Production as it is the toolroom the rest of the year. It does have hardwired internet access.

I also have a kaypro II and a coco but I don't think they are really usable.

Personally I am working on getting us to stream video as we are a multimedia event. But that is harder than radio. The new Networked GoPro3 cameras open up a new HD world. We could have multiple cameras on each stage streaming video and audio.

Our internet backbone is weak and really needs to be upgraded. Another thing I am pushing for. There is a chance we can get a direct fiber connection for the Community Center.

I can find transmitting equipment if need be but I think we are a ways away from that

does developing all this as a prototype make sense? I will prepare an ask of the board for engineering fees if that too makes sense...ultimately to bundle everything togeher.

i can/will float this on the discuss list just to get some feedback..if you re all agreeable....

Hola Paxton and other Frequency Flyers,

I could bring my E350 stretch van. It's big enough and lockable. I would need a power and network drop at the van. I could set up camp next to the van, to keep an eye on things.

I have a server we could use to serve the radio website and stream the audio (and video). My server is setup with linux. We could use a volunteer that is a hotshot with apache.

We could keep the radio website completely separate from the OCF site and save some headaches.

Thank You

Might we get a solid inventory of what we have on hand? Everything we have is one less thing to try to get via grants

This may be a classic caase of ' when the people lead, the leaders will follow!'.we have 6-7 months to application...with this kind of running start...we be just fine....
