JULY NEWSLETTER

Here we are in mid July and we still have June gloom sticking with us.
The albacore and bluefin tried to make a push up to American waters
but it seems like the majority of them are currently holding 150 miles
south around Punta Colnett. During the first half of July we
experienced what was probably the best White Sea Bass bite in years
off La Jolla. I know several of our members caught their personal best
this year. Hopefully these fish will stick around and spend some time
in Oceanside. The big question I have is when or if we are going to
get Dorado or Marlin in our local area?

Our first open bass tournament was a success. From our constantly
updated website at www.Oceansideanglersclub.com you can see that we
had;
17 boats, 51 anglers, 9 women, 2 juniors
The winners were:
1st Joe Peterson Haywood 3.6
2nd Tyler Davidson Gametime
3.3
3rd Nathan Whitney Bath Toy 2.6
4th Steve Honn Rickdiculous 2.6
5th Horace Barge Haywood 2.4

Ladies side: Robin Gibbons Rickdiculous 2.0
Junior Miles Bardin
I’m starting to break the old curse of OAC Presidents who are unable
to win a tournament. You can see team Rickdiculous a few times on the
leader board. Next year I hope to have as many participants as our
Open Halibut Tournament.

At our last meeting we had Mike Ryba with Reeb’s Lures as our speaker.
Mike did a great job addressing our members and we all benefited from
his knowledge of fishing for bass in our local waters. Mike also
donated a ton of his custom lures for our raffle. If you plan to go
Bass fishing stop by Ken’s and pick up a few of his "Kelp Assassins”
before you go.

Our speaker for August will be Owyn Snodgrass who is a Fisheries
Research Biologist with the NOAA Fisheries Service’s Southwest
Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC). Owyn has been fishing most his life
and is interested in working with us on Tuna caught in American
waters. He will have a very interesting presentation that you don’t
want to miss.

Our next tournament on August 21st and 22nd is our 2 day offshore
tournament. This is a members only tournament and once again we payout
100% of entries and add $250 club money to the winners. Just because
this tournament is called the 2 day offshore tournament doesn’t mean
it is only for members with large boats. To win this tournament all
you have to do is weigh the heaviest fish. I haven’t seen many
offshore tuna bigger than the White Seabass they have been catching
locally.

Send your e-mails with comments, suggestions, complaints and/or
praises, to Oceansidea...@yahoo.com. We like the feedback and
it helps us steer this club in the direction the members want to go.

Our next meeting is again the first Tuesday of the month, August 3rd.

Until then,
Rick Windbigler
President
OAC
