FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER
2010

Fellow club members,

As my first presidential letter I would like to let you know that the
OAC directors have been hard at work planning the upcoming events for
our club.

Our outgoing president Stan, will be presiding over our 2010 Banquet
coming up in a few days this Saturday, February 20th, 2010. Drinks
start at 6pm, dinner at 7pm, raffle and awards will follow at 8pm. If
you haven’t signed up yet, download an application from our web site
or stop by Ken’s and get your money in. We are limited to 110 people
total and expect to sell out this year.

Thanks to Wes and his many other helpers, we are putting together
another great raffle with lots of fishing goodies donated by the club,
vendors, and our members. If you have any items you would like to
donate for the raffle bring them by Ken’s shop today. Our banquet is
always a highlight of the year for me. It represents the start of
fishing season, better weather, and hanging out with good friends.

Our first regular meeting of the year will be on March 9th. Please
mark this on your calendar. It is the SECOND Tuesday of March. We
changed the date from the first Tuesday to not interfere with the Fred
Hall Show scheduled for March 3rd thru March 7th in Long Beach. By
holding our meeting following this event, we can talk about what we
purchased and saw at the show. We also have a couple of speakers
scheduled to instruct us on how to get your tackle and boat ready for
the season plus another great raffle with new items straight from the
Fred Hall Show.

We are still moving forward with our Open Halibut tournament and Open
Bass tournament to help get our participation up in these two events.
We will have 2010 tournament dates for you at our meeting in March.

Not to let the cat out of the bag but I hear Joe and Ken have some
exciting news for us on our award winners in 2009. In 2008 the awards
were swept by Gametime and their Crew. I hear this year things are
spread out a little with a twist at the end.

Past news in December is that Joey and I had a great time giving out
the donated gifts and fishing rods at Camp Pendleton. It was
questioned if the fishing rods would be accepted very well. We were
told they have a father son fishing derby coming up soon and had no
idea where they were going to get the fishing rods that they needed
for this event. They really appreciated our donation for their event.

Finally don’t forget to check out the new Website Jamie has been
working on at http://www.oceansideanglersclub.com . It has great
information on it and will be updated continually this year. You can
also sign up and get tournament news, updates, and of course our
newsletters by email.

Until this Saturday,

Oceanside Anglers Club
March Newsletter
2010

While I am writing this month’s newsletter I am wearing my favorite
fishwork shorts, flip flops, and drinking a cool beverage. Why would I
tell you this? Because today we are enjoying 75 degree weather with
sunny skies and flat seas, Yep, looks like fishing season is here.
FINALLY! I hope everyone gets out and takes advantage of this good
weather, I just returned from my first trip of the season to the
Coronado Islands, fishing for the yellowtail flag.

We had a great meeting in March, over 70 people showed up, we had a
short “Who Am I” from our directors, met some new prospective members,
great speakers, and another good raffle.

The two speakers in February were, Wes Cogan with Ken’s Custom Reel
and David Yapp with Cal-Kona Marine. Wes gave us some good tips on rod
and reel maintenance along with how to prevent some of the most common
problems when you are done fishing and store your equipment for the
next outing. David was very helpful about what you should do to get
your boat and engines ready for the season. He had great advice for us
on not using ethanol in our gas outboards and to use a stabilizing
treatment for our gas boats if we expect them to sit for over 3
months. From all the questions from our members about that topic it
looks like his advice may save thousands of dollars in repairs. Both
of our speakers encouraged our members to drop by their shops and ask
any questions you may have to be ready for the season.

Our next meeting we are back on track with our regularly scheduled
first Tuesday of the month, April 6th. We have Captain Tim Marking as
our speaker. Capt. Tim Marking is one of the Pro’s for Archer
Superbars, he is a charter Captain for Intimadator Sportfishing out of
Dana Point and a seasoned tournament fisherman. He will bring a new
prospective of fishing for halibut along with his expertise on shark
fishing.

Don’t forget to help spread the word for our OPEN HALIBUT TOURNAMENT
scheduled for April 17th. Invite all your fishing friends. We don’t
require participants to be a member for this tournament. After we get
the hook in them at this tournament and they realize what our club has
to offer, and the fun we all have, hopefully they will want to join
our club.

Oh, and about the yellowtail flag, as I write this the flag is still
available. We saw a few boats getting some nice size yellows,
unfortunately it wasn’t our lucky day.

Until March 6th,

April Newsletter

2010

I was extremely pleased with our attendance at our April meeting. We
had over 80 members show up and enjoy the fish tacos served up by the
Oceanside Yacht club. Everyone was in agreement that it was much
better than the pizza we had in the past. Jim Jenkins assured me we
would have another great meal at our next meeting so be sure to bring
your appetites. Cap’t Tim Marking and Chris Jones with Archer
Superbars were our speakers and gave us some great information on
using their bars to catch halibut along with other predatory fish.
They gave us a great deal on their product and from the feedback I
received from our members every order was delivered on time before the
tournament as promised.

Our first tournament of the year was a huge success. We beat prior
years participation with 61 boats and 190 anglers. This tournament had
larger and more fish caught compared to last year’s tournament. This
year’s winner Jeff Lowell on the 40’ Riviera “Haywood” smashed last
year’s first place fish of 15.2 lbs and beat the OAC all time record
biggest halibut with a 38.5 lb pig for first place honors. Mike Bunch
on Reel Nice n Easy took 2nd with a respectable 33.7 lb fish and 3rd
place went to Jim Dragoo on his top producing boat the “ Haywood”
again with a 32.8. It was team Haywood’s day with a 38.5, 32.8, two
other legal fish and he lost another big fish at gaff due to a pulled
hook. The feedback I got was that everyone had a great time, enjoyed
the on the water raffles, and had pretty decent fishing weather.

Our next tournament is the thresher tournament. This tournament was
scheduled for May 15th, but THE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED DUE TO THE
HARBOR CLOSING THE ACCESS TO THE BOAT RAMP FOR A BEACH SOCCER
TOURNAMENT. THE NEW TOURNAMENT DATE WILL BE MAY 22nd. Sorry for the
change but it was out of our control. If you still want to fish a
tournament on that weekend, Western Outdoor News is having their White
Sea Bass/Halibut Catalina tournament that weekend and it would be
great if an Oceanside Angler Club member won that event.

May 4th is our next scheduled meeting and we will have another great
speaker that we have had in the past, Chugey Sepulveda, Senior
Research Biologist with the PIER group. I have been bringing in new
speakers to the club to keep our meetings fresh and interesting, but
Chugey is the shark expert and does a great job of explaining shark
behavior and ways we can help the shark fishery to sustain our
tournaments long into the future.

Last I want to remind everyone of our first flags. As I right this
newsletter we have all of our flags available for whoever catches the
first fish in 7 categories. Last year the first thresher was caught on
April 30th and the first yellowtail was caught on May 30th. Lets get
out there and beat last years dates. You may ask how I know this
information, well it’s from the website of course. Jamie is doing an
excellent job on the website. If you don’t get on the site at least
once a week you are missing out on valuable information. Jamie can’t
do everything, we need more photos sent in to make our site better.
Send us photos of your fish, your anglers, your boat, whatever you
have and Jamie will try to get them up on the site. Ray and Gabe were
taking some nice boat photos during the tournament and will be sending
them in soon. Be sure to look for your boat and let Jamie know the
name of it and your anglers that were fishing with you.

See you on May 4th

As of 11:30 Pm Friday night there is one red flag flying and tomorrow
is supposed to be super windy 20 -40 knots....DO NOT GO OUT! Since I
have seen a few messages from members wondering about the status of
the Thresher tourney, I will say this-the rules and regulations are
the responsibility of each of the members of the Oceanside Anglers
Club! They can be found on the website under "forms and Rules" So that
being said our rules state that if the "Red flag" is flying or the
"Red Light" is on on the flagpole in front of the Harbor office, the
Tournament is off. It will remain off unless the small craft warning
is lifted by 7am. Otherwise the tournament is postponed. PLEASE READ
THE RULES AND REGULATIONS MEMBERS!!!!

MAY Newsletter
The feedback I have been receiving about our club has been extremely
positive.
It has been rewarding for me that the work I and the rest of the
directors have
done is appreciated. I want you all to know that we appreciate your
membership in this club and we will strive to keep our club the #1
fishing club in
California.

It takes all types of members to make our club great. When I first
joined the
club many years ago I thought the main reason a person would join the
Oceanside Anglers Club is to fish in the tournaments. I was amazed
that the
club has 200+ members and some of the tournaments are fished by 20 or
30
people. Now that I am president I am realizing that not everyone is in
the club to
fish tournaments, some are here to learn new techniques and new areas
to fish,
some are here for the camaraderie, some are here for the raffle, food
and beer,
and some are just hiding from the wife. But the fact is we are here
for our own
reasons, all I can do is listen to our members comments and
suggestions and
try to bring new ideas to the club.

Our speaker this month is new to our club, Tony Olson with Vessel
Assist. Tony
has some good advice on how to be safe and keep from breaking down at
sea.
He will also bring a slide presentation of some accidents and rescues
he has
worked on with information on how to avoid this from happening to you.
We then
have Mike Rybos with Reebs Lures in July who just won first place in
the
Catalina WON Sea bass tournament using his own lures in our area, not
in
Catalina. We are also picking a date that works for Ronnie Kovach with
“Fishing
Ventures” and his producer Danny Jackson to come speak with us about
his
adventures.

By the time you read this our thresher tournament will be over.
Hopefully we had
good weather and some good fishing with a lot of mouth hooked sharks.
We
really need to concentrate on mouth hooking these Threshers instead of
the old
way of snag and drag. It is up to you if you want to release these
fish or harvest
them, but with mouth hooking them you have a much better fighting
experience
and if you decide to release them they will be healthy and live to
fight another
day.

Send me your e-mails with comments, suggestions, complaints and/or
praises,
to Jamie our webmaster at Oceansidea...@yahoo.com or my
personal
email at Ri...@fallbrookrental.com. We like the feedback and it helps
us steer
this club in the direction the members want to go.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, June 1st.

Until then,
Rick Windbigler

Due to Bad weather the Oceanside Anglers Thresher Shark Tournament was
postponed until Saturday, May 29th. This year we have partnered up
with Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research (PIER) and NOAA to
learn how to help protect thresher sharks for the future generations.

NEW THIS YEAR!!!! This year we have partnered up with Pfleger
Institute of Environmental Research (PIER) and NOAA to learn how to
help protect thresher sharks for the future generations.

We are encouraging anglers to fish for threshers in a way so that they
are mouth hooked rather than the old snag and drag by the tail. If you
mouth hook a thresher you get a much better sport of fishing these big
threshers, if you catch a smaller one you can release it healthy for
another day. Their research as proved that catching a big thresher by
the tail almost always results in the fish sinking to the bottom and
dying.

TO ENCOURAGE THE MOUTH HOOKING TECHNIQUE, (PIER) IS DONATING A $500
ROD AND REEL COMBO TO THE WINNING TEAM CHOSEN FROM ALL MOUTH HOOKED
SHARKS, ALSO NOAA IS AWARDING THE WINNER A PLAQUE THANKING THEM FOR
THEIR EFFORTS. OAC IS GIVING AWAY PRIZES TO THE FIRST THRU THIRD TEAM
THAT CATCHES A THRESHER CAUGHT BY THE MOUTH. (all boats that hook &
release or boat a mouth hooked thresher during the tournament will be
given a raffle ticket for each thresher caught, at our June 1st
regular meeting we will put all the raffle tickets into a drum and
draw the winner)

As every year you must be a member of the Oceanside Anglers Club to
fish this tournament. Our website is www.OceansideAnglersclub.com.

Download member application here,
http://www.oceansideanglersclub.com/files/OACMembershipApplication_1_.pdf

Then you need to fill out the tournament entry, located here
http://www.oceansideanglersclub.com/files/OAC_Tournament_-_Thresher_Shark_-_May_22_2010.pdf

And drop it off at Ken’s Custom Reels in Oceanside or the lock box at
the base of the scales in Oceanside by 7:00 p.m. with $25 for the
tourney and $25 for the boat side pool.

The club donates $250.00 plus 100% of the entry fees to 1st thru 3rd
place on heaviest thresher. Only one boated thresher per boat, you
must stop fishing after you decide to boat your fish or you will be
disqualified. No limit to healthy releases. Radio channel 65 will be
used to gather thresher fishing information during the tournament.

Don’t forget the Oceanside Angler Club 10 lb line tournament this
Saturday June 12th. Entry fee is only $10 per angler and a $25 side
pool for each boat. The club pays 100% of all entries plus adds $250
into the pool and pays 1st thru 3rd. Points are awarded towards angler
of the year for 1st thru 5th. Bring the ladies along as the ladies
side pot has carried over from the last tournament and we should have
over $300 for the ladies biggest fish sidepot. Also the largest fish
by a junior wins a nice reel donated by the club

In past years this tournament has been won by barracuda, bonita,
yellowtail, and halibut. Be sure to return to the harbor by 5:00 pm
and have Ken weigh your fish. Channel 65 will be our tournament
channel, with hourly updates and on the water raffle prizes. Don’t
forget to call in your fish and help make this an exciting event.

ANGLERS MAY NOT FISH ANY LINE GREATER THAN 10 LB TEST TO QUALIFY FOR
THIS TOURNAMENT. For those with Spectra backing, we ask that you have
a minimum of 25 feet of 10 lb test line from spectra to the hook. All
other reels must have 10 lb on them from spool down to the hook, no
exceptions heavier lines will be disqualification of entire team.

July reminder from the OAC

Our monthly meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 6th. (6 days away)

On the menu this time is Lasagna, with a twist. This time when you buy
your meal ticket for $5.00 you will receive a special raffle ticket. A
raffle will be held for a fishing related item for only those that
hold a dinner meal raffle ticket. (YES! Purchase required)
We are doing this to encourage more of our members to partake in the
food offered from the Oceanside Yacht Club. The dinners have been
working out so well for us that we would like to keep this going
through out the year. Of course the only way we can do that is if we
purchase enough dinners to make it sensible to bring in an employee to
prepare the food for us. SO come hungry and buy a great dinner for
only $5.00.

Also for the raffle this time we have a custom Calico Fishing Rod made
by one of our members Randy Search from Randmade Custom Fishing Rods.
We will also have certificates for the upcoming tournaments so you can
have the rod you win custom made by Randmade for the offshore tourney
and one for the Marlin tourney customized to your colors and wording.
Randy donated his time plus gave the club all the materials at cost.
It‘s nice to have a member step up and do this for the club. Thanks
Randy!

Also Mark (Rubes) Rubin's spoke with Vessel Assist about getting a
discount for the club on our renewals for their service. When you
renew your Vessel Assist membership by phone or online, give them the
coupon code GA0024F and you will get our club discount on your
membership renewal. Another member stepping up and helping the club!
Thanks Mark!

See you all on Tuesday, Have a great fourth of July

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE FOURTH OF JULY??

Most people in the United States celebrate the 4th of July, but do you
know exactly why the holiday is so important to our country? Imagine
how you would feel if someone kept telling you what to do all of the
time and kept taking more and more of your money. That is how the
colonists felt in the years leading up to 1776. Great Britain kept
trying to make the colonists follow more rules and pay higher taxes.
People started getting mad and began making plans to be able to make
their own rules. They no longer wanted Great Britain to be able to
tell them what to do, so they decided to tell Great Britain that they
were becoming an independent country.
The Congress met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and they appointed a
committee to write a formal document that would tell Great Britain
that the Americans had decided to govern themselves. The committee
asked Thomas Jefferson to write a draft of the document, so he worked
for days, in absolute secret, until he had written a document that he
thought said everything important that the committee had discussed. On
June 28, 1776, the committee met to read Jefferson's "fair" copy they
revised the document and declared their independence on July 2, 1776.
They officially adopted it on July 4, 1776. That is why we call it
"Independence Day." Congress ordered that all members must sign the
Declaration of Independence and they all began signing the "official"
copy on August 2, 1776. In January of the next year, Congress sent
signed copies to all of the states.
The Declaration of Independence is more than just a piece of paper. It
is a symbol of our country's independence and commitment to certain
ideas. Well, the signers of the Declaration of Independence wanted the
citizens of the United States to have a document that spelled out what
was important to our leaders and citizens. They wanted us to be able
to look at the Declaration of Independence and immediately think of
the goals we should always be working for, and about the people who
have fought so hard to make these ideas possible. The people who
signed the Declaration risked being hanged for treason by the leaders
in Great Britain. They had to be very brave to sign something that
would be considered a crime! So every time we look at the Declaration
of Independence, we should think about all of the effort and ideas
that went into the document, and about the courage it took for these
people to stand up for what they knew was right -- independence!

AUGUST NEWSLETTER

If you get on any website that has information about fishing in
Southern California waters you will read about people complaining how
bad fishing is this year compared to previous years. Looking back at
previous newsletters I to have jumped on the complaint bandwagon. In
the future I will try to be more positive and write about the good
things that this slower fishing has brought us. First on the list has
got to be that this years White Sea bass catch rate is better than
ever, more fish and bigger fish. Thanks to this past weekend even I
have been able to catch a White Sea bass. We all have polished our
skills on how to, where to, and when to fish for these elusive fish.
Some of the other positives this slow year are; time to do maintenance
on our boats, fuel savings from not going long for the tuna, spend
more time with family and friends, less wear and tear on our fishing
gear, and it will make next years fishing look that much better.

Our two day offshore tournament was last weekend, I don’t have the
results as I write this but I’m sure if you check the OAC website in
the next few days you can get all the information. I did hear it was
won by the Reel Nice n Easy, congrats to John and his crew. When
Clayton gave his presentation at this months meeting he guessed that
the winner of this tournament would probably be a White Sea Bass from
La Jolla . I don’t think he guessed it would be the boat he runs, but
that’s how it worked out. I didn’t listen to Clay, I fished at San
Clemente Island and caught some White Sea bass which squeaked by for a
second place finish.

Check out our website and scroll down to the section that says; ever
wonder what the 50/50 raffle goes to???. Look at the pictures and
letters from the military families that we gave rods and reels to from
the proceeds of our 50/50 raffle. At our next meeting I would like
everyone to step up to the plate and buy at least one raffle ticket
and help support this great cause.

At our next meeting we have a few changes taking place. Somehow I have
talked the Vice President of the club, Jim “Haywood” Dragoo, into
hosting the meeting and he plans on changing things up a bit. I’m not
sure of his plans for the meeting or his speaker so I will just have
to show up like you to see what he has planned for us.

Our next tournament on September 11th and 12th is our annual billfish
tournament. This is a member only tournament and once again we payout
100% of entries and add $250 club money to the winners. Hopefully the
marlin show up soon to make our tournament this year successful.

Send your e-mails with comments, suggestions, complaints and/or
praises, to Oceansidea...@yahoo.com. We like the feedback and
it helps us steer this club in the direction the members want to go.

Our next meeting is again the first Tuesday of the month, September
7th.

Until then,
Rick Windbigler

"This is to inform you of our first Oceanside Boaters Assoc. meeting.
It will be held on September 6, 2010. We will meet at the Nautical

you are unable to make this meeting there will be another held
November 1, 2010.Let your neighbors know also."

Wayne, a long-time harbor live-aboard, may be reached at

They would be happy to answer any questions regarding the meeting.
Wayne and Marianne were very instrumental in leading harbor boaters in

Don't forget that Jim Dragoo is hosting our next meeting Tuesday the
7th of September. From an email I received from him it looks like
there will be some type of contest or raffle for a 2 day fishing trip
for two on the Big Game 90 worth over $650. (must book 30 days in
advance)

(I will give you a hint, you might start practicing your knot tying
abilities)

Meeting Tonight, Doors open at 6 PM. Come hungry, once again the OYC
will have a great dinner planned for us.

Jim Dragoo will be your host tonight with the Big Game 90 two day trip
for two people that will be given away tonight, donated by the
Haywood. You must be present to win.

We also will be discussing possible changes with our marlin tournament
this weekend. Bring some ideas on changes you might want to see to get
our participation up since the marlin have been a no show this year.

I hear the yellowfin are finally within range, get out there and
fish!!!

SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

What a weird year! This year will definitely be remembered in history
as one of the strangest years that most of us can remember. At the
start of the year we were told that El Nino is coming and most of us
were thinking Dorado and Tuna in local waters in late June or early
July. As of today the Dorado have not made much of a showing, even
down in Mexican waters. The first week of September had the tuna
finally show up close, (meaning 70 miles from Oceanside). I thought
someone in our club would catch the first marlin of the year on July
4th; finally the first Marlin for the club was caught by Reel Nice &
Easy on 9/20/10. There has been some good news this year like the
White Sea Bass has been great, we had a record catch of Halibut during
our Halibut Tournament. Who knows what is coming in the next few
months? I just read in the WON news that a Wahoo was caught off the
Long Beach Jetty? Maybe, if the strange things continue, Oceanside
Anglers will hold a Wahoo tournament in November and a Black and Blue
Marlin Tournament in December. Ha! You never know what is going to
happen for the rest of the year.

Our last Tournament was our marlin tournament and because of the lack
and distance of any marlin our club decided to open the tournament up
to any pelagic fish. Also tournament boats had an option for the first
time to launch out of San Diego. This year’s winners were Reel Nice &
Easy with a 26.4lb Albacore, Little Luck with a 19.8lb Bluefin Tuna
and Haywood with a 19.4lb Bluefin Tuna.

As I write this the Catalina Marlin Tournaments are being held, not in
Catalina as past years but in San Diego to be closer to where Marlin
have been spotted. One of our members, Reel nice & Easy, earned first
place last year in the Catalina Classic. We were hoping they would
have a repeat this year. They were in the lead after day one of the
two day event. I will let Captain Clayton tell you the rest of the
story on how they ended up for the second day and how they did at our
next meeting.

I don’t have a speaker scheduled for our next meeting, but we do have
several topics to cover. Captain Clay and Ken will give you their
story on the Marlin fishing during the Catalina Classic. Also we will
talk about Lobster fishing. Don’t forget that lobster season starts
early Saturday morning at 12:01 AM. You will need your lobster report
card with your fishing license to be legal. Those of you who don’t go
after lobster during the season are really missing out. Its fun, close
by, inexpensive, it will test your captain skills, and you get to
enjoy some fine eating when you succeed. Also I will share with you
some interesting things you can do with your lobster after you eat
them. You will have to come to the meeting to get more info.

Our next tournament on October 9th is our annual biggest fish
tournament. This is a member only tournament. Once again we payout
100% of entries and add $250 club money to the winners. Please plan on
fishing our last tournament of the year.

Send your e-mails with comments, suggestions, complaints and/or
praises, to Oceansidea...@yahoo.com. We like the feedback and
it helps us steer this club in the direction the members want to go.

Our next meeting is again the first Tuesday of the month, October
5th.

There were some ugly rumors that the launch ramp in Oceanside would be
closed the weekend of the October 2nd and 3rd due to the Oceanside
Harbor Days being held that weekend. Of course it is also opening day
Saturday morning at 12:01 am for Lobster.

Rest assured the launch ramp will be open for business. See the below
email.
Go Get Um!!

The boat launch ramp is not going to be closed. Please pass that
information on to whoever told you that it will be closed, so they can
correct themselves and get the right information out.

Thanks!

OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

Our last tournament of the year pretty much mirrored the 2010 fishing
season. Our “biggest fish” tournament was held on October 9th, I know
of at least two boats that motored over 160 miles round trip to try
and catch a tuna for a big win. Just another attempt for 2010 at going
long for a big fish but came back empty handed and heard “you should
have been there yesterday”. Of course with tournament fishing you
don’t get to decide when is the better day to go, you just decide on
where to go given the weather and conditions that you are dealt with.
After the tournament was over it was the teams that stayed local who
were the big winners, not only did they catch the biggest fish of the
tournament, 2.6lbs, they also were able to sleep in, save hundreds of
dollars on fuel, bait and food, and they actually got fish.

To give you an idea on the planning of an offshore trip it goes
something like this; 3, 2 and 1 day before the tournament we research,
weather, wind, sea temp, water clarity, fishing conditions, talk with
fishing buddies, check the sport boat counts and generally plan where
the fish are, where they are moving to, and where we want to be at
6:00 am on tournament day. On Friday morning we go down to the boat,
buy fuel, check oils, do any maintenance required, buy bait, and then
go buy provisions for the trip, (mostly beer and some food), we then
meet back at the boat and start rigging, trolling rods, bait rods,
marlin casters, light rods, heavy rods, gaffs, then one last look at
the conditions and last picture of the Sea temp in the area we are
going to fish and we are ready. We depart at a time that we can run
(about 8 to 10 knots) all night conserving fuel and will put us on our
“spot” at 6:00 am. We leave around 8pm and get set to travel all
night, running the boat in shifts of two people per shift usually
means a 10pm to 12:30 am shift, a 12:30 to 3am shift, and my favorite
the 3 to fish shift. (This is my favorite as you are wide awake and
ready to start fishing at 6:00 am with the trollers out and bait rods
ready). If you are lucky enough to catch some tuna in the morning you
still have to make it back in Oceanside by the 5pm deadline. Now you
have to calculate boat speed figuring the weather, current and chop,
distance to travel, and how many hours it will take you to get back
with a little cushion. For our last tournament we were about 80 miles
down and with the conditions we figure we could run just a tad faster
than 20 knots, meaning we would have to stop fishing around 12:30 to
be in Oceanside by the 5pm deadline.

After you read the above paragraph you might say “why go thru all that
work and money to catch a fish or win a tournament”? Well if you are
competitive like me and like to fish there is no better experience
than working hard, putting in the time, and winning the tournament.
The money does make a difference, but for most tournaments the money
you may win doesn’t even pay for the fuel. I fish tournaments for many
reasons, I love the ocean, I love to fish, I’m very competitive, I
love the hunt for big fish and the payoff of catching one, but mostly
spending time on the water with friends, everybody working together
and each person doing their part on the boat. There is nothing better
for me than running a boat and putting your guys on the fish. I think
I will have to start planning one more tuna trip while they are still
here!

Don’t forget the last but very important meeting on November 2nd, at
700pm. Not only is this the last meeting of the year but we will be
electing our directors and officers for next year. We are currently
planning our year end banquet and not sure of the location as I write
this. We are looking at different venues and different dates but so
far it looks like it will be on February 19th so keep that date open.

Send your e-mails with comments, suggestions, complaints and/or
praises, to Oceansidea...@yahoo.com. We like the feedback and
it helps us steer this club in the direction the members want to go.

Our next meeting is again the first Tuesday of the month, November
2nd.

Please be patient with the changes that google has made, Jamie is
doing us a great favor with keeping up on our website.

I also have a short survey I would like everyone who gets this email
to take. It will only take 30 seconds and it will help steer the club
for our upcomming banquet and next year. Please clic on the following
