JUNE NEWSLETTER

Here we are the middle of June and our water temp is still too cold
for the pelagics to move up in our waters. It seems like in past years
at this time we were catching yellowtail off patties out front and I
was thinking about that first dorado flag. Maybe I losing my patience
and this year’s fishing season just seems like it is taking too long
to get here.

Our 10 lb line tournament was very successful. It was won this year
with an unbelievable catch of a 38.6 White sea bass by Mike York on
Fish 2 Win. That is a whopper compared to previous winners of our
light line tournament. You can get all the information you need from
our website thanks to our very talented webmaster Jamie Lyons.

Unfortunately my experience with the 10 lb tournament didn’t turn out
to good. Our biggest fish was a bass under 3 lbs and I destroyed a
transmission. Luckily we had one good tranny left and made it back to
the harbor. A few hours of work on Monday and the tranny is at the
repair facility getting rebuilt. Hopefully I will be running again for
the bass tournament. Since my boat was down, I did get invited on my
first tuna trip of the year with my friend Jim on the “Haywood”. If
you check the website you will get your answer if we were successful,
I’m sure Jim will have a full story for you at the next meeting.

At our last meeting we had Tony with Vessel Assist as our speaker. He
had a great presentation and some good info on how not to break down
at sea. He also donated a couple of gold memberships to our raffle.
You don’t want to get stuck at sea without some type of plan, if you
weren’t lucky enough to win a membership, give Tony a call at
619-235-8273.

Our speaker for July will be Mike Ryba with Reebs Lures. He will be
talking to us about one of his passions and that is bass fishing. He
also just won first place in the Western Outdoor News Catalina White
Sea Bass Tournament. He will be a great speaker for the club and has
will bring a new perspective for us on bass fishing.

Our next tournament on July 10th is our bass tournament. This year for
the first time it is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. We need some help getting the
word out so please help us by telling all your friends to join us.
Open tournaments brings outsiders to our club and increases
memberships. Hopefully this turns out to be a successful event and we
can continue it for years to come.

Send me your e-mails with comments, suggestions, complaints and/or
praises, to Jamie our webmaster at Oceansidea...@yahoo.com. We
like the feedback and it helps us steer this club in the direction the
members want to go.

Our next meeting is again the first Tuesday of the month, July 6th.

Until then,

Rick Windbigler

JULY NEWSLETTER

Here we are in mid July and we still have June gloom sticking with us.
The albacore and bluefin tried to make a push up to American waters
but it seems like the majority of them are currently holding 150 miles
south around Punta Colnett. During the first half of July we
experienced what was probably the best White Sea Bass bite in years
off La Jolla. I know several of our members caught their personal best
this year. Hopefully these fish will stick around and spend some time
in Oceanside. The big question I have is when or if we are going to
get Dorado or Marlin in our local area?

Our first open bass tournament was a success. From our constantly
updated website at www.Oceansideanglersclub.com you can see that we
had;
17 boats, 51 anglers, 9 women, 2 juniors
The winners were:
1st Joe Peterson Haywood 3.6
2nd Tyler Davidson Gametime
3.3
3rd Nathan Whitney Bath Toy 2.6
4th Steve Honn Rickdiculous 2.6
5th Horace Barge Haywood 2.4

Ladies side: Robin Gibbons Rickdiculous 2.0
Junior Miles Bardin
I’m starting to break the old curse of OAC Presidents who are unable
to win a tournament. You can see team Rickdiculous a few times on the
leader board. Next year I hope to have as many participants as our
Open Halibut Tournament.

At our last meeting we had Mike Ryba with Reeb’s Lures as our speaker.
Mike did a great job addressing our members and we all benefited from
his knowledge of fishing for bass in our local waters. Mike also
donated a ton of his custom lures for our raffle. If you plan to go
Bass fishing stop by Ken’s and pick up a few of his "Kelp Assassins”
before you go.

Our speaker for August will be Owyn Snodgrass who is a Fisheries
Research Biologist with the NOAA Fisheries Service’s Southwest
Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC). Owyn has been fishing most his life
and is interested in working with us on Tuna caught in American
waters. He will have a very interesting presentation that you don’t
want to miss.

Our next tournament on August 21st and 22nd is our 2 day offshore
tournament. This is a members only tournament and once again we payout
100% of entries and add $250 club money to the winners. Just because
this tournament is called the 2 day offshore tournament doesn’t mean
it is only for members with large boats. To win this tournament all
you have to do is weigh the heaviest fish. I haven’t seen many
offshore tuna bigger than the White Seabass they have been catching
locally.

Send your e-mails with comments, suggestions, complaints and/or
praises, to Oceansidea...@yahoo.com. We like the feedback and
it helps us steer this club in the direction the members want to go.

Our next meeting is again the first Tuesday of the month, August 3rd.

Until then,
Rick Windbigler
