I'm thinking about getting a custom front rando rack built for my Rambler this winter. I thought I'd ping the list to see if there was interest in a group order before I start contacting builders.

I'm interested in a wide body traditional rando rack, with provisions to mount a light and fender.

Great idea!
You might want to consider a detachable lowrider option as well?

Here's mine:

Yes, I was planning on getting a custom rack for my Rambler. If our design ideas are similar I'd be in for a group order!

I will catch up later with pics, mobile at the moment, but there is a project along these lines that we started with Colin, Hauling Colin, and had to stall due to time and funding constraints.  If the interest is there, I have no problems dusting this one off from where we left it

Count me in on an OAC rack. The cost will be offset by selling my Mark's Rack and Bruce Gordon rack that are currently hacked together on my bike. Speaking of which, I need to talk to my mechanic (me)...

Oh man, my Pass and Stow rack just shipped from Oakland, otherwise I would be really interested in an OAC rack. Rob, I'm a big fan of your design approach.

Thanks for chiming in Rob! I'd love to see what you have in store.

I think Ryan's rack looks pretty sweet. That's really exactly what I had in mind.

Like Don, I just put a Pass and Stow rack on my Rambler.  But I can also use that one on another bike.  So I'll follow the discussion on all of this closely in case I can be lured into the frenzy.

I have the Nitto Campee 650B on my Rambler but would love a rack that had a wider platform with removable low-riders. Been waiting for the OAC rack to move up Rob’s priority list but am happy to look at other options.

"I'm interested in a wide body traditional rando rack, with provisions to mount a light and fender. "

Kevin:

When you say "wide body" are you thinking of something wider than the traditional rando size?  I've considered that a platform with something like an 8" x 10" size would better support rando style bags.

Also, a nice clean detachable low rider would be a major plus.  Rob & I have talked racks a couple of times, & I've encouraged him on the subject as we have similar thoughts.  Sounds like the time is right & the support is here for an order.

In general, I like the Pass & Stow design, but on close inspection it seems overbuilt.  Not like Surly overbuilt, but am I the only one who thinks so?

Ryan Watson's rack
As I live in a high-theft city, I regularly lock my bike to racks and parking meters with a single, short U-Lock. Sometimes the Sheldon method, but since I have Pitlocks on my wheels and a chain on my saddle, I frequently just u-lock the headtube to something.  With the curved struts on Ryan's rack, I worry that I wouldn't be able to get close enough my fixed locking object and would want something with tighter clearances to the fork and brake.  Only once have I had to do anything to my brakes when the bike wasn't on the work stand, so I won't be annoyed at the tight clearances leaving me unable to tweak something out on the road.

Pass & Stow
"overbuilt", no. Overkill for carrying a rando bag - probably.

I had one for years that I finally sold to a friend in Germany because he really wanted one. I haven't regretted it because once I got my Rambler setup as my everything-but-mountain-biking bike, the Docena and panniers let me carry everything I need to.

Sure, I can't randomly take home a dresser from the sidewalk like I used to (see below), but that isn't necessary. Nor is carrying home a 20 lb CSA veggie box on my way home from work. See more stupid things I have carried on my Pass & Stow, including a complete BMX bike on Flickr:

Jason:

Clearly, your load carrying needs far exceed mine!  I recall riding your Rambler in Oakland, and you having a Docena with tons of stuff.  The Rambler design handled the load without my even noticing it.  What's your "ordinary" weight of the Docena?  I know Oakland requires serious lockage.

I have the original Acorn Boxy Rando bag, and have never gotten anything larger since I know that in my case "junk expands to fill the available space".  As it is, I can cram 10-12 lbs into the Acorn but that's about it.  My guess is a rack rated for 20 lbs would work for many people.

BTW, how are rack load capacity ratings derived?  The little Nitto that my Acorn sits on is rated at something silly like 5 lbs.  The bag, a lock, jacket, lunch & the usual odds'n'ends easily exceed that.

I'm def interested in whatever Rob cooks up, particularly if it has detachable low riders and if the platform goes well with the Docena, and has mounts for light and fender attachment.

Cheers,
Tom

So, I finally found my original design sketches while cleaning up the shop this weekend.  Looking back over them it looks like the idea made it to the 90% mark and was going to need some modeling to work out the kinks.  High res pics attached so you can blow them up and read it

On the plus side, the shape of the top rack will hit everything from the smaller bags from Berthtoud or Acorn all the way up to our Docena at 4 points an provide pretty goos bottom stability

The hardest thing, that I see overlooked on many designs, is how the pannier hooks interact with the lowrider flange.  many barely fit he simple bent hooks, let alone the more complex locking cam styles, in a way that actually works or constrains the front to back movement.  It gets a bit harder still, when you really analyze the motion of taking them on and off easily,

I still think that this design is the starting point we will be leaping from once i come up with some time and funds.
