Didn't see an idea thread so I thought I'd make one. Here's some of my
ideas:
-There are multiple Facebook pages for Occupy Knoxville, and now there
are multiple websites for it. There are almost half a dozen places now
with discussion areas. I think we should look at consolidating and
uniting into one effective and powerful web presence, with one
Facebook page for Knoxville, and one official website. Further, I
think we should go ahead and get a domain, and name it simply
occupyknox.com. Part of the reason this movement has caught on is
because of the powerful yet short name it has. Not as many people are
going to want to type in occupywallstreetknoxville.weebly.com, or may
feel we are not as serious about it, or may simply type it in wrong
because it is so long. It needs to be a marketable domain name, as
well, like occupyknox.com.
-We should find out which businesses in the area support the cause. If
we can get a running tally, we can pull on that support. For instance,
many business owners who support the movement may let us place flyers
in their windows.
-We need different landing webpages for different campaigns. For
instance, we could have a landing page that has links to the other
site functions, but is mainly information about the next event, and
thanks users for using their smartphone. Why smartphone? Because in
this instance, we have printed off hundreds of QR codes that send
smartphone users to a webpage thanking them for using their QR code
reader. Make hundreds of flyers with big QR codes in the middle and a
mysterious tagline, like "Occupy me with your QR reader"
-I think we could benefit from having a huge drive to get people to
show up to these events with their smartphones and home cams to video
tape the event from their perspective and upload to YouTube. We would
then have multitudes of footage from different angles of the event,
all hopefully tagged with "knoxville," and "occupy wall street," and
could then feature a web page for each event with each video embedded.
This also gives people more reason and personal ownership in the event
to want to more readily share the footage with friends and network
contacts, as well as drives up the local awareness through taking over
YouTube searches for "knoxville."
-We could benefit from setting up even a CafePress account and selling
bumper stickers. CafePress would be easiest because they dropship per
order with no minimum required.

Hi James, these are awesome Ideas, I want to contribute and build from
your Ideas to get a solid discussion going.
consolidating our web presence is good, but we need more than one
resource with the exact same info, for people who are not comfortable
with one point of access or the another. Also your site Idea is good,
I would prefer an ORG because we are an organization not a company
(org vs. com) also .orgs are generally less expensive to register. I
dont agree that the movement is popular because it has a simple short
name or message. the issues that have created this revolution are too
complex to sum up with simple tag lines, that buys into the medias
idea that our country and our society should function on easily
digestible nuggets of incomplete information. These are big, complex
issues and the solutions are going to be complex as well. we need to
inform people not trick them into fellowship with one liners.
I agree that we need to contact as many local business for solidarity
as possible, this should be submitted to the Local action committee
for follow up, big time.

Franklin, .ORG is a solid idea.
I can understand multiple resources, but if we can get most of the
conversation happening in one official place, it will be more
streamlined, easier to organize, and won't have good ideas scattered
too thin.
Please don't get me wrong, I do not think that THE reason the movement
is happening is because of its name, or even a big reason. The reason
the movement is happening is because we had a housing crisis, and
Washington decided the best route was to let homeowners get put on the
street and big corp and banks get bailed out, we saw firsthand where
the 99 percent stand, it wasn't women and children first with the
captain staying on board til the bitter end, it was the captain and
the captain's political and financial interests all shoved onto the
lifeboats with the women, children, and men of the 99 percent stuck on
a sinking ship. And I do not think that anything should be done to
trick anyone as far as the website name goes. I also do not agree with
big media tactics. However, a short and easy to remember name that can
be easily associated with this big complex movement is preferable to a
long and complex name, yes? That is all I was saying. A name that is
easier to remember and spread will be more effective than a name that
is too unwieldy.
QR codes are super easy. There are free web services that offer
completely free and professional QR code image generation that
includes any information modern QR codes allow, from the ability to
prompt smartphone users to text a preset message to friends to having
the user visit a webpage. If we come up with some good QR campaigns,
all we have to do is make the webpage(s) and then ask all of our
supporters to help by printing the QR code flyer at home and help
distribute them.
Augmented reality can be tricky but the benefits could be staggering.
Imagine every Bank of America location in East TN with an augmented
reality programmed by us where users view any given location using
augmented reality and see royal flags and towering majestic luxurious
fantasy augmentations, but all surrounding properties appear gloomy
and decrepit and ransacked. All kinds of things are possible with
augmented reality, but it would require some serious programming and
design.
This brings me to another idea, I am wondering what the benefit would
be to try to start a new resource website for East TN for those who
support Occupy Wall Street. This would be simply a database where
supporters could register and tag themselves with their own abilities
and experiences that they would be willing to volunteer for the cause,
such as programming, phone work, etc. Something where at any given
point the organizers and the general public could both go online and
see, "hey, we have 50 programmers on our side right now. Can we do
something with that?"

I have a good page for us to work internally,

desperate need of our organizations info, especially contact data, as
you can see it's pretty much blank, this page and the weebly page are
like you said, kinda convoluted in address length but with the catch
all page forwarding out to our internal resources we can provide ease
of access and transparency. I would love to start compiling a list of
our activist members and maybe just a general list of projects that be
collaboratively worked on via these web resources. Our new currency is
information/data and technology, we have to take advantage. Hope to
see you at the General Assembly this weekend and James are you on any
of the committees? we need people that are proactive to be leaders

I saw that page, thank you for the link, Franklin. It looks like a
good set-up. I agree that the most valuable resource is information
and technology. Between open source practices and creative commons,
things like TED, and Bold Progressives, we are at the crest of a new
age. I think we should strive for beyond just a list, we need tools.
The world and the nation needs tools, efficient tools that really show
how we can form together and unite and that allow us to do so. The
problem is, the tools are out there already but so much has been
advanced in so many different areas that as a species we are still
struggling to fathom what kind of connections and exponentialization
of efforts can be had

I have contacted their technical group for the source code so that all
the occupy chapters can implement this tool, I have signed up and used
it and it is ABSOLUTELY perfect for the needs of all of our occupation
groups. They said they support open source code so we should have it
by morning.

Its a wordpress format, totally easy to set up and use. all we need to
do is register the address. hopefully in the next GA this will be
passed and we can take some action towards this.
