Hot Topics – Victor Houston, aka General "Can-Do," of the original Black Panther Party – Thursday 4/12/12 @ 9pm ET / 6pm PT
General "Can Do" Victor Houston, of the original Black Panther Party, describes the organizational techniques the Panthers used in the 1960's with great success. At the beginning they raised money by selling inexpensive materials such as buttons. Then newspapers. They invested the proceeds into staging bigger rallies. Those rallies brought in thousands of people with music and food as a draw. Collecting additional donations at the large rallies provided funding which the Panthers invested in community programs. The programs showed the people the organization was there to help them. Further donations were then obtained by party members standing on street corners asking for donations—-support-—for the programs. Each step built upon the previous to create a secure funding and support operation for the group's activities and growth. As a model for funding the growth of a people's movement, there is much reason to believe this bootstrapping operation could still be relevant today. Houston calls this talk "principles in being more effective."
