Occupy Venice is holding GAs at 7pm every Monday & Thursday at 1358 Abbot Kinney and in mid April will be transitioning to the west lawn of Beyond Baroque on Venice Blvd as a venue for future GAs & events. In trade, OV will be installing ocean-friendly landscaping on the site and improving the grounds for larger scale use. Since Feb OV has been aggressive in supporting the unhoused population on 3rd Ave & Rose and recently created a Homeless/Unhoused Working Group of area relief and community activists. In late march OV joined members of the Venice Community Housing Corporation, National Lawyers Guild, and Venice Community Unity Coalition in successfully stopping a city Dep’t of Sanitation sweep on 3rd Ave that targeted the personal possessions of the homeless population. We are continuing to coordinate ongoing citizen rights and legal trainings with the Los Angeles Community Action Network & the NLG and are building a coalition with VCHC, VCUC, POWER, and Common Ground to defend the legal rights of the homeless. OV is also hosting weekly plantings & events at it’s new Occupy the Garden site at Venice High School and will be managing additional garden projects and giving presentations at other schools this spring to highlight GMO & food security issues. The OV Arts group co-hosted the Occupy Art Show benefit with OLA at the Vortex on March 31 and has plans to hold another show in the summer. Over 40 artists displayed their work. The event attracted about 200 folks who showed up to lend support to Alex Weinschenker’s family and take in an installation of the encampment & the Kids Art Village. On April 8th we hosted the ’99 Poets for Occupy’ at Beyond Baroque that featured readings from 1-7pm and community discussion/workshops on homelessness, health care, foreclosures, and citizen rights. OV is currently working with westside occupies and other community activist groups on planning for the upcoming westside M1GS action and caravan on May Day. We print a weekly newsletter and the website is www.occupyvenice.org.
