Long, long ago, during the Occupy era (and the hunger strike for voting rights and budget autonomy), a number of people on this listserv posted powerful, compelling essays on the predicament of being stateless. Those posts could be retrieved, dusted off, and with minimal tweaking, turned into testimony.
Now is the time!
Here are the instructions! (thanks to Ann Hoffman and Elinor Hart).
If you cannot attend the hearing:
If you plan to attend the hearing:
[B]ring hard copy of your testimony to Monday’s Senate hearing on the New Columbia Admission Act. The Committee Clerk, Laura Kilbride, prefers to have it sent to her by e-mail which we should do as well. But we need something visual to be presented to Senator Carper during the hearing. Janet Brown is arranging with Alice Rivlin to offer to Senator Carper testimony from DC residents at the time that Alice testifies.
In either case:
Testimony should have your name and address on it, and it should be identified as follows;
Testimony on the Implications of the New Columbia Admission Act
Presented to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs
September 15th, 2014
Let's show the Senators (and Representatives) who've had the guts to sponsor and sign onto the New Columbia Admissions acts in their chambers, as well as the hard-working residents who have tirelessly lobbied for these bills, some love. It's easy to live in the limbo we've all become accustomed to, but it's not healthy for our society, and it's not healthy for us as individuals. We can and must claim the full citizenship due all Americans.
Thanks very much!
