The DC Statehood Coalition is gearing up for a very active
summer.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington. It will
draw an enormous crowd of visitors from around the country and the world, and generate much media
attention. The Mayor is appointing a special commission to coordinate a weeklong series of events from Wednesday, August 21 to Wednesday, August 28, consisting of receptions, parties, symposia, lectures, films, performances, etc. The climax will be on Saturday, August 24 when there will be a large march on the
National Mall. There will also be a DC march that will feed into the larger march.
The DC Statehood Coalition will be actively supporting these efforts, and using the occasion to show the nation that DC residents are committed to achieve statehood. We would like to see every DC neighborhood represented in the march on August 24th, including those in Ward 4. We are organizing events in a variety of neighborhoods this summer to get out the word about the march, as well as offering statehood merchandise.
One major event is the Palisades Parade on Thursday, July 4th. The DC Statehood Coalition has marched in prior years and we want to make this one particularly memorable, with many neighborhoods represented. We will also organize small outreach events at neighborhood farmers markets, festivals, etc.
Please let me know if you can:
1) join us on July 4th at
the Palisades Parade: rsvp
at
http://statehoodpalisadesparade.eventbrite.com/2)
be a neighborhood contact who can help us organize these statehood
efforts in Ward 4 neighborhoods to let people know about the March on Washington events.
Thanks so much,
Kesh
