A knowledgeable answer to a query about how our current governance structure would be altered if we were to gain statehood.
Andrea Rosen P.S. My apologies for publicly venting earlier. Just goes to show that I’m ambidextrous when it comes to putting my foot in my mouth (digitally as well as actually).

If the residential and commercial parts of the District of Columbia became a state, the existing home rule" (colonial) government would be abolished and we would have a new state government with an elected governor, unicameral legislature of 25 members and our own judicial system (it is now under the Federal government). The details are spelling out in the proposed constitution for the State of New Columbia (the 1987 constitution approved by the Council which can be found in vol. 1 of the D.C. Code) and in the Senate and House bills (H.R. 292 and S. 132). If you have any questions, please call me at 202-363-6658.
