Dear Andrea:

The fiscal year 2014 federal budget process is underway. Included in that process is the local budget for the District of Columbia, which Congress has to approve. While District residents overwhelmingly passed a referendum to give DC local budget control <http://www.dcvote.org/budgetreferendum/victory.cfm?cid=4819&uid=121643>  on April 23rd, the change in the law has yet to take effect, so we continue to face a familiar challenge. Year after year, instead of simply approving our local budget, Congress attempts to use the appropriations process to inject their own policy agenda and repeal laws that DC’s local elected leaders have already passed. Past examples of this behavior include attaching amendments to undermine our gun laws and our reproductive health policies. Join us Tuesday, May 28th in room 2168 of the Rayburn House Office Building from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM as DC Vote, along with Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Mayor Vincent Gray, hold a press conference urging Congress to stay out of DC’s local affairs. We are calling on Congress to respect the voices of DC residents and the authority of our Mayor and the DC Council. If you plan on attending this event, please rsvp to rs...@dcvote.org <mailto: rs...@dcvote.org>  or call 202.462.6000 x21. We face the constant threat of Congressional attacks on the District’s self-determination. Please consider joining <http://www.dcvote.org/donate>  DC Vote today, and becoming a part of the fight for full democracy for all DC residents. Thank you for your support. I hope to see you on Tuesday, May 28th. Sincerely,

Kimberly Perry
Executive Director

Thanks, Andrea.  I spoke to Michael this morning at DC Vote, and told him I would be coming to the Rayburn HOB Tuesday morning.  (He recommends getting there at least 15 minutes early.)  Let me know if you want to go together.
Best,
Bill
