When was the last time the US Senate held a hearing on statehood for DC residents? Never!
Next Monday, September 15, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hold the very first Senate hearing on the New Columbia Admission Act (S. 132), which will shrink the borders of the District of Columbia and create the 51st state from the residential and commercial parts of Washington, DC.
We are very grateful to Senator Tom Carper (DE), who chairs the committee, as well as the 17 co-sponsors in the Senate and 105 co-sponsors in the House. Check our website to see if your congressmembers are supporting the bill.
Please take a minute to thank the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee for holding the hearing and urging all committee members to co-sponsor the bill. Just click here to write a short message on their website. The more Senators hear from their constituents, the better our chance of getting the bill passed in committee.
Here is a sample email. Feel free to change the language in any way you wish; also, before you submit your message, please copy your message and email it to newcolum...@gmail.com.

Thank you so much for holding the first ever Senate hearing on the New Columbia Admission Act. It is a major step forwards toward granting these American citizens the full rights of citizenship. I am grateful to all the Senators who have already co-sponsored the bill, and urge those who have not done so to sign on as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
