Inside the Egyptian Revolution
Sharat Lin
10:00 am-Noon
San Jose Peace & Justice Center (48 South 7th Street)
Suggested Donation: $5 for SJPJC. No one turned away for lack of
funds.

Overthrowing President Hosni Mubarak was the easy part. Illusions of
the Army as an agent of change have disintegrated. Today the Egyptian
people come to grips with the realities of state power and the complex
task of formulating a popular consensus for a new democratic and
socially equitable Egypt. In addition, the Tunisian and Egyptian
sparks have lit the Arab Spring and the American Autumn.

Sharat G. Lin discusses how it started, the social forces at work,
Egypt in context of the Arab Spring, and what lies ahead. Dr. Lin is
president of the San Jose Peace and Justice Center. He writes on
global political economy, the Middle East, labor migration, and public
health, and has lived for many years in the Arab World.

This event is co-sponsored with the San Jose Peace & Justice Center

Human Rights for the 99%!: The Philippines, the 99%, and the Global
Occupy Movement
1:30-2:45 pm

funds.

Join us for a panel discussion with progressive Bay Area Filipino
organizations and supporters of Human Rights! We will be exploring
how the 1%, through their financial injustices across the world, bind
together the struggles of the 99% in the Philippines and the US.

This December 10th, known as International Human Rights Day, marks the
63rd Anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human
Rights. We will be joining forces with progressive Filipino
organizations and supporters of Human Rights for the 99% to stand in
solidarity. We stand as witness that Occupy is an extension of
historical resistance movements throughout the world. The Occupy
movement successfully articulates the existing financial inequities
and mobilizes across class lines the 99% who continue to feel the
economic depression first hand.

In the Philippines, human rights violations have worsened with the
implementation of Counterinsurgency programs modeled after the U.S.
government’s Counter Intelligence program (COINTELPRO). The Philippine
Oplan Bantay Laya I & II and now the Oplan Bayanihan are responsible
for over 1,250 political killings and 206 disappearances over the last
10 years, due to the corrupt Philippine government controlled by the
1% of the U.S. While the U.S. government continues to send our tax
dollars to the Philippines–$32 Million annually–to fund the “War on
Terror” and military training for counter-terrorist activities,
peaceful protests in US school campuses and our streets are
increasingly ending in police initiated brutality and violence.
