At our May Meeting we will be discussing legislators on the North Shore who have not yet co-signed the We the People Act in the legislature and discussing how to organize in those districts and get a group of constituents who will go visit the legislator and urge them to sign on. We also need to develop an overall outreach plan to educate, inform and involve potential new members.
As I think about where we are in our country, it seems clearer and clearer to me that Citizens United is foundational to all of our challenging issues at present. If we were to pass an amendment with the two planks we have always called for (money isn’t speech and corporations cannot have rights granted to humans in the Constitution), we would be on a path to restoring our democracy by taking it back from people with enormous wealth and from corporations seeking to increase their profits. Without an amendment, I fear we are opening the door to rule by those very interests (as we are witnessing today). AND,the longer we wait the more challenging it will become.
I hope you can join us and commit to this critical effort.
Kathy Lique
Coordinator
