Dear Friend of We the People MA, “Our system is broken.” “Ctizens United is one of the worst Supreme Court decisions ever.” “The influence of money in elections is dangerous to our country…” Campaign quotes from each of the top three presidential candidates. Hard to tell them apart? Maybe because they each know most Americans – across the political spectrum – support reform. This April in Washington, to help highlight the will of the people, We the People Massachusetts activists took part in Democracy Spring, the country’s largest-yet civil disobedience action of the 21st century. Among our demands: Propose a democracy amendment to the U.S. constitution! To deliver our message we did everything from demonstrating to marching from Philadelphia to nonviolently sitting in. Over 1,200 were arrested without incident. But of course protests are just part of the plan. After helping to win landslide ballot question victories for democracy in 2012 and 2014, WTP volunteers continue to promote a state bill advancing a federal amendment ending bought elections and corporate “rights.” This spring we lobbied hard to get a floor vote for our bill. Said one legislator, “I cannot return to [my district] if I vote against this.” But, as often happens in winning efforts, we lost the first round. To prevail next time, we need your help. Thank you! For democracy, The We the People Massachusetts Statewide Coordinating Team We the People Massachusetts 21 Main Street, Suite 4 Hudson, MA 01749
