Dear All,
As Allison wrote, Nicky Tiso has started a google group for a Occupy Porltand poetry/publishing thread (so thank you, Nicky!) I thought I'd cc: people for this email, but then you can decide whether or not you want to join that group & continue this thread. I pasted Nicky's invitation below.

It would be great to join poetry efforts with publication/DIY/culture work efforts. Nicky is working on linking people from the IPRC to Occupy Portland. Hillary, the woman Allison mentioned who is working at the Occupy library and helping schedule workshops, suggested that a poetry/language/publishing table/tent/location be connected to the art tent. The art tent is across from the library, and seems like a really active, creative space.

I'll repost the link that Bryan Coffelt sent out before so it's listed for anyone joining the list: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/feliz-l-molina/occupy-wall-street-poetry_b_1023161.html

I appreciate how that Occupy Wall Street poetry anthology is made on-site, and that it is distributed onsite via the library--the commons. This supports the important role that Occupy Portland plays in holding a physical space.

Also, this makes me think of Matthew Stadler's point that "publishing" is about making a "public"--so that the publication/distribution/etc is all about a particular--and located--public. Here's a link to Matthew's comments on this subject:

Allison & I are going to hold a poetry workshop on Friday, Nov 11, 4-5. We'll keep it simple, just opening up a space for reflective writing, and just see what happens. Our sense was that there's room for many such efforts, so people have options/things to do.

All best to you all,

Kaia

Hey all,

I encourage you to join if you're interested and to spread the word/invite others! The idea is that this group becomes a way to collectivize/organize conversations about poetry/protest/social action in relation to the Portland Occupation, and to figure out how we can take action! So, let's organize and expand our group!

About this group:

[provisional] Online forum to bring together those interested in finding ways to publicly involve literature (reading, writing, zine-making, etc.) in the ongoing Portland Occupation movement!

Accept This Invitation

Kaia,

Just to clarify, your workshop will be at the Occupy Library? Any
materials requested?
I think starting to anthologize what will be made together is a great
idea, towards that publishing/public interconnection.
Still working on the IPRC end!

Nicky

Kaia + everyone,

Thanks for spreading the word about our desire to spread words. Also, I just made everyone who's as of now a member an owner of the group, so we can all be poetry CEOs.

Also I do recommend checking out (or joining) OccupyOaklandPoets if you wanna see how the poetry community there is participating in the Occupation, because as you likely know the situation is heated down there and this is one way to stay in touch!
