The Occupy Poughkeepsie Journal

Seeking tangible solutions to social inequality, locally and nationally.

Brought to you by the Media Working Group of Occupy Poughkeepsie.

Vol. 1 #9

February 29, 2012

Tomorrow, Thursday, March 1st, is a National Day of Action for Education where colleges and Universities across the nation will be holding demonstrations about increases in tuition costs and cuts in federal aid to education among other relevant issues. Events at both DCC and Vassar will culminate with a rally with Occupy Poughkeepsie at Hulme Park at 2PM.
If you're at Dutchess Community College, events begin at 10:15 with a school-wide walkout. Meet outside Hudson Hall at the gauntlet. Bring pots and pans, drums, and noise makers of various kinds. Also, signs and banners... but at least bring a friend.

If you're at Vassar, events there begin at 11:30AM with a student rally and walkout. Meet at the quad for a rally. At 12:45 there will be a march on campus followed at 1:15 with a General Assembly and then the rally at Hulme Park with OPK and DCC.
The Occupy Poughkeepsie Journal is expanding its reach! At our last Media Working Group meeting it was decided that we would make space on this page for information regarding other Occupy affinity groups in the Valley to keep you better informed of what's going on in the region as a whole. We also agreed to restart the Occupy Hudson Valley newsletter. If you're part of an affinity group working in the Valley you'll be hearing from either Tom T or Elaine F over the next week or so. In the meantime, write to us at pr...@occupypoughkeepsie.org to have your events and a brief summary of your General Assemblies in this new, expanded space.

At OPK's February 24th General Assembly the topics ranged from a realignment of our general assemblies to the March 1st Day of Action, finding a new treasurer, and to the possibility of funding a fire-pit at Hulme Park.

Our Foreclosure and Eviction Defense Working Group met last Saturday at Vassar college to further their work in that arena. Blair Goodman produced a brochure we can hand out to people whose homes are either in, or about to be in foreclosure. City Life/Vida Urbana, a similar group to ours that has been working for near 40 years, has contacted us and is glad to give their support to our efforts. Nobody Leaves, another group working in Springfield, MA has also been in touch with us and there is a coalition of groups in New York City that we could join.

New Video Project from OPK:
The Media Working Group is now engaged in a new project to create a series of video vignettes for distribution by OPK. Each 60 second video will consist of one person telling viewers why they're part of OPK. The idea is to show the public the faces of OPK and the myriad reasons why you joined on and continue to participate. What we're looking for now are participants willing to write up a 50 second-long statement they can practice before filming so that their segments are coherent, well thought out and to avoid the "hems and haws and er's and uhhhhs" of an unscripted session. This will make production easier and so that we can shoot each segment in a single take. If you'd like to participate, drop us a note at pr...@occupypoughkeepsie.org within the next few days.

News From...

Occupy Saugerties:  At Occupy Saugerties' last GA issues brought up included: Hydrofracking, Foreclosure Defense, a Mission Statement, the OHV Mumble call and others. They also agreed to look into joining efforts with "Move to Amend", an organization that seeks to amend the constitution to replace campaign funding via private contributors and super PACs with public funding for campaign financing. They will meet again on March 19, 2012 at the Senior Center in Saugerties.

Upcoming Events:

Free Film Screening: The One Percent
Crafted Kup Coffeehouse, 44 Raymond Avenue, Poughkeepsie (just up the road from Vassar)
In this hard-hitting but humorous documentary, director Jamie Johnson takes the exploration of wealth one step further. The One Percent, refers to the tiny percentage of Americans who control nearly half the wealth of the U.S. Johnson's thesis is that this wealth in the hands of so few people is a danger to our very way of life. "Mr. Johnson has become the rich man's Michael Moore." -Wall Street Journal

The screening will be followed by an audience discussion. This is part of the "Give Peace a Film" series and there is no admission charge, although a collection will be taken for Occupy Poughkeepsie.
