Vol. 1 #8

February 23, 2012

New Video Project from OPK: The Media Working Group is now engaged in a new project to create a series of video vignettes for distribution by OPK. Each 60 second video will consist of one person telling viewers why they're part of OPK. The idea is to show the public the faces of OPK and the myriad reasons why you joined on and continue to participate. What we're looking for now are participants willing to write up a 50 second-long statement they can practice before filming so that their segments are coherent, well thought out and to avoid the "hems and haws and er's and uhhhhs" of an unscripted session. This will make production easier and so that we can shoot each segment in a single take. If you'd like to participate, drop us a note at pr...@occupypoughkeepsie.org within the next few days.

On Sunday, February 19, a Know Your Rights training was held at Christ Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, directly before the Occupy Poughkeepsie General Assembly. Eleven attendees heard attorney Valeria Gheorghiu, a member of the National Lawyers Guild based in Kingston, discuss how to assert our constitutional rights as well as strategies for interacting with law enforcement officials. Gheorghiu led the group through role-playing exercises and answered questions regarding First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendment rights as well as other constitutional and legal protections. We have rights only to the extent that we are aware of them and exercise them, so educate yourself and others. To organize your own training or obtain pamphlets, contact Andrew Sawtelle at andrews...@riseup.net. More information is available from the NLG at http://www.nlg.org/resources/know-your-rights.

The next meeting of Occupy Poughkeepsie Direct Action Working Group (DAWG) will be on Friday, February 24th at 5:30pm in the basement of Christ Episcopal Church at 22 Carrol Street. Please be in attendance so we can do some planning for actions, and move toward the March 1st National Day of Action for Education.

From Kathy and Tom of our Mom and Dad's Support Group: When the Occupiers were evicted from Hulme Park, Tom and I helped remove a lot of stuff that was in the "kitchen" area.  I finally unpacked all of the stuff we were storing.  We have recently donated the non-perishable food, plastic ware, paper plates, bags, foil, etc. to the Grace Smith House. From what we still have here, Vonn claimed her ladle, and we're bringing Karl his pie plate and slotted spoon tomorrow.  There are still various pieces of silverware, some utensils and a few baking trays, if anyone recalls something they might be missing.  There is also a large tan mixing bowl with mushroom prints on the side.  Another item is a large clear glass Pyrex quiche or deep pie dish with a rippled edge. If any of this belongs to any of you, and you would like us to hold it for you, please e-mail and we’ll work it out.  If no one responds within a few weeks, we would like to make another donation to the Grace Smith House. If any of you are storing stuff that you would like to donate, just give me a call and I will put you in touch with the person you need to contact, as I cannot include that info online. Write Kathy and Tom here.

OPKer Andy Papula has written a new song, "I Accept Responsibility" which you can see on his Youtube channel here.

At our General Assembly on February 17th, we talked about some of the problems with metal detectors and police at Poughkeepsie High School and questioned why they were there. Our Foreclosure Defense Working Group has now visited more than 60 families in the city. The nationwide student action on March 1st was also discussed.

OPKs Stone Soup program continues in Hulme Park on Friday evenings from 4:30PM until 6:30PM, just in time to get you to our Friday evening GA at 7PM. Come on out, have some soup, bring some food to share, bring a drum and Occupy Hulme Park with some good food and cheer and like-minded people.

OPK hosts an informal "think-tank" program each Monday night at 7PM at Christ Episcopal Church, 22 Carroll Street. Topics are as wide spread and varied as are those who attend. Feel free to drop in and add your views.

OPKs Musicians Working Group: A group of spirited musicians comes together to meet, play music and exchange ideas. The group meets as needed to play together and rehearse. If you'd like to join, please contact Andy Papula at (845) 242-6760
