The Occupy Poughkeepsie Journal

Seeking tangible solutions to social inequality, locally and nationally.

Brought to you by the Media Working Group of Occupy Poughkeepsie.

Vol. 1 #2

January 12, 2012

On Tuesday, January 10, twenty-seven Occupiers from the Hudson Valley traveled to Albany to be part of a rally sponsored by the Alliance for Quality Education seeking to restore money for educational programs that were cut from the current state budget. One outcome of the event was that we were able to connect with Occupy Syracuse and Occupy Buffalo for the first time in person.

Occupy Poughkeepsie was prominently and positively featured in an article, "Occupiers Say They'll Be Around", in the Poughkeepsie Journal's Wednesday, January 11, edition and we're pleased to be there. Check it out at their website.

On Saturday morning, January 7, Andy Papula appeared on Joel Tyner's radio show on WHVW (950AM) to sing two songs he had written about the Occupation movement and to talk about his involvement with us. Appearing with his wife, Lisa, his was the major portion of the show that morning.

Documentary film maker, Elaine Fernandez, attended the January 6 General Assembly to discuss her idea of recording OPK as part of her online series regarding the well-being and concerns of New Yorkers and as a way of showing the public what the Movement is really about, contrary to what's been shown on the mass media.

Our Foreclosure Working Group has canvassed more than 100 homes to date but could use more help. If you have a couple of hours to spare on almost any day of the week to check out homes that are in Foreclosure and talk to their owners, please contact the group at the link below. This Working Group has also begun a chapter of, ""Nobody Leaves" Mid-Hudson, which will become the central focus for their work.

At the January 9th GA, OPK reiterated its support and participation in Poughkeepsie's Martin Luther King Day Celebration on Monday, January 16 (see above, Days of Action, for more information.)

You work with good people you get good shit.

There's now (Thanks to Tom,) a signup button on the website and we
picked up one new reader from that. We might consider some way of
pushing that a bit in other venues now that the newsletter is alive.

Now... who posted the minutes from the last two meetings? I have some
significant issues with both the recording and the editorial tone. For
example, I never called anyone "flakey" [sic] and I certainly didn't do
it multiple times.
