This past weekend saw Occupy Poughkeepsie's "Days of
Action" event which ran from Saturday, January 14th through
Tuesday, January 17th and by all accounts the event was both an
internal and external success. The weekend saw a day-time
reoccupation of Hulme park and judging by the number of "honks" from
passersby, the OPK encampment was missed and still much appreciated.
Each day in the event had a theme:
Saturday:
Police State of Mind, where issues of the NDAA and
similar were covered and discussed.
Sunday:
Capitalism in Crisis, gave us an opportunity to talk
about economic issues, capitalism and consumerism.
Monday:
Liberty and Justice For All, was about human rights,
civil rights and worker's rights and,
Tuesday:
Occupy and the Community, where in think-tank
discussions and other events the matters of how the Occupation works
within communities was the focus.
As part of the weekend events OPK participated in the city's Martin
Luther King Day parade and rally which began at the AME Zion Church,
included a rally at City Hall and finished with refreshments at the
Holy Light Pentecostal Church.
After the MLK events OPK held think tank discussions at Christ
Episcopal church, regional working group assemblies and a regional
General Assembly later that evening.
Our 'Days of Action' culminated on Tuesday evening with an
appearance at the Poughkeepsie Common Council. Council Chair Gwen
Johnson warmly welcomed more than a dozen members of OPK to the
meeting where several spoke on issues of importance to them and to
the Occupation as a whole. Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro
and Poughkeepsie Mayor John
Tkazyik were both in attendance.
Speakers for the weekend
included (but were not limited to,) Tim Koechlin, a political
economist who teaches at Vassar College, Gerald Lyons from SEIU
Local 200 and Harold Miller from the NY Committee for Change. Musicians
who participated included Pat Lamana, Fred Nagel and Andy Papula.
