Vol. 1 #5

February 1, 2012

On Monday, January 30th, 6 members of Occupy Poughkeepsie, 5 from New Paltz and one from Kingston, joined the community at Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 130th birthday celebration at his homestead in Hyde Park, New York. Several Occupiers gathered at the walkway entrance to the Rose Garden holding signs in support of FDR's policies and calling for a new, New Deal.

The overall reaction from the attending crowd was very positive and Park Police did not disperse the Occupiers even though they made note that a permit was necessary for political demonstrations on Federal property.

On Monday, February 6th, Occupy Wall Street is coming to Occupy Poughkeepsie with a full afternoon and evening of events at Christ Episcopal Church on Carroll Street. Events begin at 3PM with a workshop, followed at 5PM with a pot luck dinner with OPK and the Dutchess Peace Coalition, and finishing at 7PM with out regular Monday evening Think Tank session. For more information and the latest schedule, follow our website at occupypoughkeepsie.org.

Last week Blair Goodman and James Trembley of OPKs sForeclosure Working Group traveled to Springfield, MA to witness a meeting of "No One Leaves" a group that helps people in foreclosure get through the process. The coalition that forms the organization is made up of the American Friends Service Committee of Western Mass, Arise for Social Justice, WNEC Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, Western Mass. Jobs with Justice, Springfield Partners for Community Action, Pioneer Valley Project, and Universal Community Voices Eliminating Disparities. No One Leaves mobilizes tenants and former homeowners living in recently or about to be foreclosed homes (bank tenants) to stop evictions, protect Springfield’s housing and communities, and mobilize bank tenants to fight back against major lending institutions and banks that are tearing our communities apart. The goal of the visit was to seek information on bringing that project here to the mid-Hudson Valley. More information on the project can be found here: http://www.projectnooneleaves.org/

Our Musicians Working Group
: For the initial meeting, a group of spirited musicians came together last Thursday to meet, play music and exchange ideas. They'll be meeting each Thursday at 7PM to continue on. See below for contact information.
