Hey Occupiers!

Remember how we made a big stink over the new jail's $165 million
price tag? And the fact that it was going to be built on a toxic site
called Chemical Way? And the fact that a lack of state funding might
end up inflating the construction costs to $400 due to interest on
bonds?

Well, there some good news and some victories to report that members
of ORWC, OSJ, CURB, and the rest of the Stop the San Mateo Jail
Coalition have played a big role in!

On Tuesday morning at 9AM the Board of Supes will vote for a new
agreement which caps the cost of the new jail at $126 million.

Also, earlier this week, the Sheriff’s Office Jail Planning Unit
announced that its remediation of the land formerly known as Chemical
Way exceeded cleanliness standards, according to the California Water
Board. In other words, the Sheriff’s Office had more soil removed than
originally planned for land remediation.

Unfortunately, this means the jail is still being built, and that
bonds will still be issued to cover the remaining costs. But the fact
that land remediation was done above and beyond what was necessary and
the fact that the price tag was cut due to public criticism are pretty
significant victories.

Come out to the meeting to voice your thanks for these new
developments, or to continue to voice your opposition to a new jail!
The Board of Supervisors meets 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 in Board
Chambers, 400 County Government Center, Redwood City.

See you there, hopefully! :)
