After Saturday's march in Downtown West Palm Beach, people from the assembly got together in small groups to discuss what specific reasons brought them to the Occupy movement, as well as some ideas for actions our group can be taking. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Reasons people are at Occupy Palm Beach County:

  • Economic insecurity: Layoffs, bad jobs, no benefits, the death of the American Dreams, student loan crisis, loss of homes through foreclosure
  • 1% Holding the Majority of the Wealth
  • Tax money funding the corporations & Tax cuts for the Wealthy
  • Too much money in politics
  • Outsourcing of corporations
  • Corporate Profit: in pharmaceutical industries & pill mills, in for-profit prisons extracting slave labor from African American/Latino populations and poor whites/Asians
  • Pollution, i.e. the Port of Palm Beach
  • War – endless wars, too much of our budget spent on war
  • Inadequate health care system

Some Ideas for Action

Locally

  • Create fact sheet on local politicians
  • Protest in Palm Beach during snowbird season, find addresses of greedy CEO’s homes
  • “Shop-in” to shut down Worth Avenue stores (shopping without buying)
  • Get more people involved via t-shirts, the free press, etc.
  • Improve communication: phone trees, leaflets
  • Demonstrate against nearby businesses like Port of Palm Beach, Viking, Rybovich,Cracker Boy, Rinker, Tropical, FPL, Lockheed Martin, Geo Corp, Wackenhut, Corrections Corp. of America

National

  • End corporate personhood status
  • Achieve direct democracy: one person, one vote
  • Glass-Steagel
  • Citizens United
  • Buffet Rule

I agree totally with all points. Why not send these great points made to various modes of media.  Hopefully this can enlighten some who refuse to "hear" the issues.

I think we need a plan of action in place to remedy these things
rather than just complaining them.
