to Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to share with you a film and web storytelling project we have been working on for a couple of years at Highland Hospital, where Scott Olson is now a patient.

Our project is a portrait of this vital public hospital at a time when the social contract in America is being debated and many public hospitals are being shut down. Many people do not realize that these safety-net hospitals play a vital role in caring for patients like Scott who have been seriously injured. The trauma centers at public hospitals - like that at Highland - are often the best in the country.

But our story is mainly about the people stuck in the waiting room at Highland and other public hospitals around the country. They are stuck, isolated and waiting for change. In a sense, they are a manifestation of the challenges facing our country. They are truly the 99%. They have lost jobs, lost health insurance, and in some cases lost hope.

We are trying to change that by providing a space for them to connect, express and share. We hope you can help spread the word about our project. Any blog mentions, tweets or FB posts would help us achieve our goal of allowing these voices to be heard. The project is just starting up so your network could really help push these voices out there.

We have produced a documentary film that will air on the PBS series Independent Lens in the Fall of 2012. In the interim we are building a community of fans and supporters around the project.

We hope you can help get these voices at Highland heard in Oakland and beyond.
