The following is the leaflet being distributed by the OEA. Note that they are calling for a separate rally at 4:00 p.m. at the State building and a BBQ at 6:00 p.m. I think these are not helpful to the unity of the general strike as they will be drawing people away. It's true that they announce the other times (morning and noon), but we must remember that many workers are likely to only come after the end of the day, which is to say from 4:00 p.m. onwards.

Subject: [oaklandteachers] OEA Flier for November 2

WHY THE OEA SUPPORTS OCCUPY OAKLAND’S MASS DAY OF ACTION/GENERAL STRIKE*

-         Occupy Oakland and the Worldwide Occupy Movement are fighting for full funding for all social services, including public schools.

-         Many of our members have been actively participating in the Occupy Oakland movement, and at least 3 were injured in the October 25 crack-down, along with a number of other union activists.

-         On Wednesday, October 26 the OUSD School Board voted to shutter 5 schools in Oakland. Unless we build a movement to demand that the top 1% pay their fair share, more school closures will follow.

-         The Alameda Central Labor Council, which represents unions from all over Oakland, including the OEA, has voted to endorse Occupy Oakland.

-         Occupy Oakland is a model of democracy in action where everyone is free to express their view and where everyone has one vote regardless of wealth or influence.

-         Because of the violent and unprovoked crackdown against the peaceful protest on Tuesday, October 25, Oakland has garnered worldwide publicity and attention. Oakland educators need to be seen on the frontlines of the fight for progressive taxation and full funding for public schools and other public services.

* Wednesday’s action is not an OEA-sanctioned strike against OUSD

What you can do to support Occupy Oakland:

Monday

-         Hold a site meeting and reach consensus on the action(s) each member will take.

-         Let your site rep know if you need an OEA T-shirt

-         If you plan to request a personal day on November 2, put that in writing to your principal by the end of the day October 31.

-         Immediately find a sub if you’re planning on not working Wednesday.

-         Inform your principal of the plans at your site.

-         Arrange class coverage with your colleagues as needed (see Wednesday menu).

-         Download and photocopy this flier for members, and the front side only for parents. (Spanish translation will be available on the website to copy.)

-         Site reps pick up necessary OEA T-shirts.

-         Check for updates frequently: www.oaklandea.org, www.occupyoakland.org, and on Twitter @OaklandEA.

Tuesday

-         Distribute the Occupy Oakland OEA flyer to parents.

-         Inform parents of your site-specific plans for Wednesday.

-         Check for updates frequently: www.oaklandea.org and www.occupyoakland.org, and on Twitter @OaklandEA.

Wednesday (pick from this action menu)

-         Take a personal day on November 2. OUSD has guaranteed in writing that they will honor personal leave taken November 2 as long as there is adequate coverage.

-         Join Occupy Oakland at Frank Ogawa Plaza. Key gathering times: 9am, noon, and 5pm.

-         If you teach on Wednesday, have a teach-in about the history of general strikes and organizing efforts against economic injustice (search keywords: Hooverville, Oakland general strike 1946, depression, bonus army).

-         Leave at lunch or at the end of the student day to join Occupy Oakland.

-         4 pm: all OEA members meet in your OEA green T-shirt at the State Building downtown at 1515 Clay St.

-         6 pm: attend solidarity barbecue hosted by Alameda Central Labor Council unions.

-         Check for updates frequently: www.oaklandea.org and www.occupyoakland.org, and on Twitter @OaklandEA.

Well this us unfortunate as it is, as John says, not good for building unity.
The other problem is that it decreases the opportunity for Union members and the Occupy Oakland folks to mix and build some general solidarity with each other making future joint actions more likely.

Hi,

Let me clarify the OEA statement: This is NOT a separate rally. OEA members are participating in a number of different ways tomorrow, and this meeting point and time was made to just coordinate a contingent of members. It is simply as a point of convergence, after which we will march to the occupation site.

This is the most recent OEA email:

This is the latest schedule (of course the situation is fluid and the schedule is subject to change):

Converge at Frank Ogawa (Oscar Grant) Plaza at 9 a.m., noon, and 5 p.m.

9 a.m. and again at noon: Bank Actions (marches, flash mob, "living room in the street" foreclosure action

11 a.m.: Education march from Laney College to the Plaza, arriving at noon

4 p.m.: OEA members and supporters (with support of Berkeley Federation of Teachers) converge at the State Building at 1515 Clay St to march over to the Plaza

5 p.m.: March on the Port of Oakland

I hope that clarifies any misunderstandings.
