Hi friends,

The Ellis Act that ravaged the rental market in San Francisco, to undercut rent controls, has come to us in LA, and our building is a case in point.  We all received eviction notices Jan 8th.  All the tenants in Villa Carlotta in Hollywood got theirs Christmas Eve. Soon to come to a neighborhood near you...

We're holding a public meeting at Founders MCC 3:00 this Sunday to organize against the Ellis Act.

But I'm convinced that God is so good as to turn evil to good, and I want to promote an idea:  Since, in order to evoke the Ellis Act the landlord has to claim he/she wants out of the landlord business, local non-profits and/or the city can take these buildings over to stabilize the housing market and provide additional units of permanent housing for the homeless.  THERE ARE PRECENDENTS! 

If any of you can sign on in any capacity to help with this effort, let me know.  I hope to see some of you Sunday.

Thanks, Scott.  It would be great if you could pass this flyer along.  I sent you an earlier draft.  Here's a revised one with MCC's address and a map on it.

In order to invoke the "Ellis Act" for these evictions the landlords have to declare that they are wanting to get out of the rental market.  Let's take them at their word, and have the city buy up the properties, using the buy-out dollars that the tenants are given, as a down payment, and turn these buildings into affordable housing, with environmentally friendly community gardens, and some permanent supportive housing units.

There are four people living in tents at the corner of our street, and just before Christmas one homeless woman asked one of our older hefty tenants, who sports a big white beard, "Santa, can you just give me a place to live?"

Yes, we can!
