Could this be an Occupy Your Block event?

First of all, it was so good to see everyone in the streets!!

I have one more note from the meeting on Wednesday -

Brent and I stopped by the Hattie Carthan Community Garden Market - Herban Farm on Van Buren b/w Tompkins and Throop last Friday (http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2011/07/31/hattie-carthan-farmers-market-and-grand-opening-celebration; http://www.facebook.com/HattieCarthanGardenMarkets), and met the woman (we forgot her name) who started this community garden/farmers' market.  She first worked on the larger Hattie Carthan Community Garden (and maybe started that, too) (http://www.hattiecarthancommunitymarket.com/) at Marcy and Lafayette.  It has chickens!

She said that the land on which Herban Farm was built was an abandoned city lot, and she applied for it through the city by drawing plans for it and submitting her resume.  We asked if we worked with her on her Farm whether she'd be interested in teaching us how to go through the process as well, and she seemed to be interested.  She wasn't teeming with excitement, so I think we need to first show that we're serious by helping out at the Farm first.  They're still working on fall crops now, so there's still opportunities to help.  If anyone goes by, it would be great to organize a work day, and then we can continue to build a relationship with her in the spring!

Thanks Natalie!  Here is some additional info:

Robert Pluma's contact info: robot...@gmail.com, 646 505 9382.  He's from Occupy Brooklyn and is organizing the Broadway Junction hub at 3PM.

The NYS Coalition of Concerned Legal Professionals approached us at Occupy Your Block and asked to partner with us.  Some people at Occupy Brooklyn shared some links with me about them and their umbrella organization:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Labor_Federation We agreed that we should be cautious and not formally partner with them for now.

Regarding OBK wanting us to host a GA, we can either find a space (or they can help us find a space), and we can facilitate the meeting.  Although we didn't talk about this at the meeting, I think it would be helpful for those who'd like to facilitate the meeting to get some training from the OBK facilitation working group.  We agreed to host the OBK GA meeting.

Also, some people in OBK are talking about having a neighborhoods spokes council which would consist of representatives from neighborhood groups.  Some ideas include having the neighborhood groups share resources and plan actions together.  We agreed to continue the conversation with OBK about this group.

Next meeting will be next Tuesday, 11/22, at 7:30 PM at Freebrook Academy.

See you in the streets!

We were also hoping to do an event with the Bushwick farm we were unfortunately unable to connect with at last weekend's OYB event. Hopefully we can get an appropriate working group involved or started on Sunday to get all of this organized and ensure that as many people as possible participate.

BSO, please let OBK know if you want our support working with community gardens in your neighborhood. Obviously this is a BSO initiative and I'm sure OBK will want to support in any way they can.
