Subject: Urgent Update - Conference Cmte. Meeting TODAY Cancelled
To: Occupy The Hood <occupythe...@gmail.com>

Greetings,

We found out yesterday that the Conference Committee Meeting re: 3 Strikes Bill which was scheduled for today at 2:30pm has been cancelled.

It is my belief that this last minute cancellation is a direct result of our organizing and the meeting of Sat. the 7th. I believe they were worried about having the meeting and having a potentially large group of people in opposition show up. To avoid that and disrupt our momentum the easiest way out for them was to cancel the meeting.

Since this, there has been quite a bit of confusion. I will tell you the several different ideas and then you can make your own decision.

1. Myself, Jamarhl Crawford, as the organizer of the Sat. Jan. 7th meeting where this Conf. Cmte. Mtg. was announced has decided to not go to the State House due to this cancellation. My reasoning: The point of bringing a number of people to the State House was to attend the meeting with as many as could fit in the room and to show the Conference Cmte. members that there are large numbers of people concerned about this issue. Since the Conf. Cmte. Mtg. was cancelled it seems pointless to go to the State House. I am of the belief that we should not waste peoples time, many of whom take time from work and family to attend these mobilizations. I do not see the point of mobilizing people for a meeting that isn't happening, I would much rather just wait until the meeting is rescheduled and use all of our time and energy in the most efficient manner possible. Our recommendation is to not go to the State House today and to be prepared for the next steps.

2. There are others who say they are still going to the State House. Many of you may have received an email from the Rev. George Walters-Sleyon of the Center for Church and Prison encouraging people to go the State House. We disagree with this course of action and do not want people to be confused. To be clear: This effort by Rev. George Walters-Sleyon is his own separate effort and we do not have anything to do with it and did not organize it. Also to be clear myself, Jamarhl Crawford and the Blackstonian and Occupy The Hood have no affiliation with Rev. Georger Walters-Sleyon or the Center for Church and Prison. We have made a strategic decision to not go to the State House today, if you still want to go, please do so and keep in mind this is not one of our organizational efforts so we are unable to answer any questions and cannot take responsibility for the outcomes, if any, should you decide to go.

3. SO WHAT DO WE SUGGEST YOU DO INSTEAD?
Continue on what we had already decided.
Continue to Call and Email...
1. Your own Senator & Representative
2. Members of the Conference Committee
3. Office of the Governor
Tell them you support the position of the MA Black and Latino Legislative Caucus.
