Dear Friend-
As you may know, my name is Jenji Learn. I'm a trans* advocate and activist, a political organizer, writer, science and technology blogger and columnist, and a certified paralegal by training.
After several months of homelessness and unemployment, I finally have a chance to put my training to use, but I need your help to do it. Those that know me personally may be aware of what a critical juncture I'm at; regardless, I hope you'll take the time to listen to my story and see if you can help me reach my goal of 750 dollars, through a tax deductible contribution to Trans United, to reach my dream of entering the legal field and becoming a community advocate.
When I made my transition public last year, many of my friends were quite supportive, but unfortunately the same could not be said of my family, nor the religiously affiliated law school where I had been attending classes. That, combined with a reduction in financial aid, meant that I was broke and homeless by the time I finished my certification.
Since then, I have struggled mightily to find work, and have been heartbroken by the amount of prejudice that remains, even in a "professional" field like the law.
All this time, I never gave up on my community and on my dream of advocating for all of us. So, now, in my time of need, I have no choice but to turn to the community that I hope to advocate for. This is where your help can make an enormous difference for me. I need to be able to eat properly, get my phone service restored, replace the formal clothing that was stolen or lost in the shelters, get myself cleaned up and be able to afford a few bus tickets to get to interviews.
Can you donate $50, $20, or $10 today so that I can have a chance to pursue these opportunities? I hope with your help I will be able to achieve great things very soon.
With Love and Regard,
Jenji Cassandra Learn
