I think the first step of this group should be the formation of an editorial board. Lets identify the minds that are creating this national platform and get down to work creating it.
Perhaps the board will form as a result of these calls.
After that, lets explore Lauren's idea of local bureaus. Bureaus can work in two directions. We can aggregate media from the bureaus, and we can deliver news back to them.
In this way, we can create a wide seedbed of Occupy media platforms that will get the Occupy message out to their local audience. Some local bureaus may just receive media for sharing and contribute little. That's fine. At least they will be a conduit for the Occupy message. Other's will contribute as much as they receive. Even better.
If we want to create bureaus, we have to consider the motivations of each bureau. I know that I am more excited about being involved in a project which allows me to produce my own unique Occupy show. This would be true even if all I did was edit media that I obtained from the national aggregator.
It makes perfect sense. If we want to create a national system of local bureaus, we will need to give all of those media providers a sufficient stream of outlets to show off their work. OTVPA is a wonderful platform, but it only airs for half and hour once a week. If we create a nationwide system of local news bureaus and only offer thirty minutes of finished product each week, pretty soon our media providers will lose interest. Most of them will never reach any sort of audience.
We need to create the audience at each level as we create the system of media providers. We can do this by creating a variety of pre-set formats that each bureau can implement through their own cable access show, or youtube channel. We provide the format and the material and give each local outlet the freedom to use it.
At the same time, we pull all of the media upward into the national Occupy show. Like all of the local shows, the national show will have a set format. Our national anchor will handle intro, maybe news updates and transitional sections. After that, the creation of the national Occupy show will be a matter of plugging in finished work from all of the locals.
I would like to be part of an editorial board which is tasked with creating the national media pool and network of outlets that will organically create a national Occupy show.
