Hi, everyone. Happy New Year! Sorry I've haven't posted any news in so long.
I've been in touch directly with a few of you and have fallen out of the
habit of making sure the rest of you can be in the loop. My last word about
our plans, our decision to take a break from broadcasting on public access
TV, I made almost in passing in my post about Episode 2.10 being on YouTube.
So let me start from there.
We decided that the ship needed mending, and couldn't be mended while out at
sea. So, we are taking a break for a season or two from doing a weekly show
and in this hiatus time are focusing on reorganizing the group, our
workflow, and our relations with other Occupy media. Before returning to our
weekly schedule we want to have made the production of the show far more
manageable, with many more people involved in the process, and we want to
establish distribution channels that get us a viewership much greater than
what we've been getting on BCAT, MNN and our YouTube channel.
Right now my top priority is networking existing Occupiers in all media --
video, radio, Web, livestream, etc., around and outside the nation into an
effective news bureau and media distribution network. I am jumping on the
latest initiative of our comrades in Eugene, OR, and we are building on the
works of earlier similar attempts. The planning is all happening in a Google
Group I started, https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/occupynetwork and
on weekly teleconferences. Exciting things are afoot. For example, within
these discussions have emerged a fellow in Spokane who, independently of us,
launched an initiative to get Occupy shows on public access stations around
the nation, and a guy in Salem who has just started an Occupy TV show.
The Google Group is open for anyone with the link to join, though at this
stage we are not openly publicizing it, so all of you are invited to join,
but please ask before sharing the link.
During this time between actually using public access TV, we do plan to tape
news segments and broadcast them on YouTube, but so far we have not
established a studio to tape the anchor segments in, and I have been
avoiding shooting in the field, partly because of a shoulder injury I am
just recovering from, and partly because I really want to focus on the
network building and don't want to get sucked back into too much
media-making before we have the infrastructure built. Svetlana has been
planning to make a studio in her apartment in Chelsea, but perhaps has been
too busy taking the TV Production course at BCAT to have made progress? Also
Melanie was going to ask if we could use the studio where she works; can we
get a reportback on that?
Maybe it's getting to be time to meet in person again. Anyone interested?
