Lyle, on September 1, one of the most heinous abortion restrictions in the United States will go into effect in Texas.
SB 8 bans abortion at six weeks and permits any individual or organization in the country to sue Texans who help people access abortion care. It is the latest escalation in the anti-abortion crusade to not only criminalize abortion, but criminalize anyone involved in ensuring abortion is safe and accessible, too.
SB 8 specifically targets abortion funds, which provide small grants and/or practical assistance (like housing, transportation, childcare, lodging, and translation services) to people seeking abortion care. It is critical that we rush donations to abortion funds in Texas so they can continue to help people access care and budget for legal defense fees.
Please chip in so Texas abortion funds can protect staff and volunteers from legal threats while working to make abortion accessible for all Texans who want and need care.
In a state as large as Texas, abortion funds have to go big, too. There are nine abortion funds that will be at risk beginning September 1: the West Fund, Fund Texas Choice, Frontera Fund, The Bridge Collective, Clinic Access Support Network, Lilith Fund, Texas Equal Access Fund, Jane’s Due Process, and Support Your Sistah at the Afiya Center.
When SB 8 goes into effect, volunteers at these abortion funds could face at least $10,000 in damages for every abortion they help someone access. Combined with the reality that Texans will have to travel out of state to access abortion after six weeks, incurring more costs from transportation, lodging, and the potential of more than one clinic visit, funds’ budgets will be more strained than ever.
Lyle, as a former abortion fund volunteer and Vice Chair, I know firsthand the utmost importance of every single dollar raised in times of crisis. Please make a contribution that is meaningful to you to ensure that Texas abortion funds can continue this necessary work in the face of legal threats and restrictions.
