Lyle,
We received awful news last week. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced that they will go to court to defend the Trump Administration's nationwide abandonment of gray wolves that has allowed Wisconsin to kill hundreds of wolves this spring with plans for even more bloodshed this November.
This is an inexcusable choice by Interior Secretary Haaland and President Biden that excludes Tribal voices and ignores the expert advice of hundreds of biologists, ecologists, and legal scholars that have pleaded with them to protect gray wolves.
We will continue to forcefully advocate for action by this Administration to protect gray wolves by granting emergency listing in the Pacific Northwest, and in the Northern Rockies and we will work with allies in-state to demand better state management in states like Wisconsin.
Just this week, we joined with a partner organization in Idaho in filing a formal petition to the Administration to reinstate a federal monitoring program to oversee the management of gray wolves in Idaho and Montana after both states passed heinous state laws to drastically reduce wolves including the use of baiting, snaring, and increased trapping. The petition also calls for federal officials to do a status review that could lead to relisting wolves under the Endangered Species Act.
We will continue to seize every opportunity to persuade the Biden Administration to stop this rampant and senseless killing but I need your help. Please make a tax-deductible gift today to keep us in the fight to save wolves.
Thank you,
-Leda
Lyle,
We have waited long enough. We have organized; we have mobilized. People from around the United States have spoken out by email, in person, and through their elected officials.
Now, it's time for President Biden and Secretary Haaland to move into action before time has run out for wolves in Wisconsin, Idaho, Montana, and beyond. While they delay, hunters are being empowered to kill wolves using inhumane and high-tech methods. Wolves are facing dog packs, baiting, night vision goggles, unlimited weapons, snares, bounties, and more.
Help keep the pressure on President Biden and Interior Secretary Haaland with your donation to save wolves.
In Idaho, the unlimited hunting and trapping of wolves has begun. Montana will soon follow. Wildlife agents working for the State of Oregon gunned down two wolf pups from a helicopter just days ago and plan to kill two more. And Wisconsin has just approved the killing of 300 wolves this autumn1–doubling the “quota” recommended by biologists–after enabling hunters and trappers to kill 218 wolves in February.
Partner with us to stop this slaughter.
We and our allies have delivered a mountain of evidence and advocacy to this Administration. With your help we sent 60,000 emails into the Department of Interior urging them to again protect wolves under the Endangered Species Act.
The Endangered Species Coalition also reached out to Congress for their support. And a bipartisan delegation of 85 Members of Congress signed a letter to the Secretary of the Department of Interior2 asking the Administration to bring back protections for wolves.
At the same time, we were one of 70 organizations that formally petitioned the Biden Administration to protect gray wolves as "endangered" throughout the West.3
You and I helped to raise the profile of this Washington Post Op-ed4 from President Obama's FWS Director, Dan Ashe, calling for emergency protections for wolves-–sending more than 20,000 contacts to the White house asking President Biden and Secretary Haaland to read his urgent plea and to finally act. As Dan Ashe states in his OpEd, “This is not wildlife management; it’s ecocide.”
Despite all of this, there has been no response from the Administration, beyond the President saying "I'm in!" when questioned on wolves during an appearance on a popular children's YouTube program three months ago.5
We can’t stop now. Help us keep these actions going.
If we are going to stop the worst from happening, there can be no more delays. Cabinet Secretaries and Presidents have an obligation to respond to emergencies and to listen to their constituents. To date, this Administration has done neither on gray wolves. This must change. We will continue to ratchet up the pressure until it does. Please support this emergency campaign to save gray wolves with your donation today.
Sincerely,
Leda Huta
