Dear family,friends and acquaintances,

My name is Rob Robinson and I am a long time volunteer in the Human Right to Housing program at the National Economic and Social Rights Initiative (NESRI)

and member of the host committee for the NESRI 10th Anniversary celebration. Many of you know of my recent trip to Detroit to support Michigan Welfare Rights

Organization (MWRO) as they welcomed two UN Special Rapporteurs for an up close look at violations of the human right to water.

The idea started with  (MWRO) members last June dropping the NESRI documentary More Than a Roof on a table and asking "how can we do something like this in Detroit"? They knew of my past experiences being involved in UN mechanisms and thought the process would be good for Detroit; I gained first hand experience with UN mechanisms guided by the support and empowerment of NESRI in the fall of 2009. The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Raquel Rolnik came to the  US on an official mission in October of that year and visited several US cities. The events that constituted the visit were organized by members of grassroots organizations like Picture the Homeless(PTH), in NYC, the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign (CAEC), MayDay New Orleans, Northeast Pennsylvania Organizing Center and the Los Angeles Community Action Center( LACAN) working together with NESRI staff. The documentary More Than a Roof is a NESRI co-produced film in conjunction with grassroots media makers that details the historic 2009 mission. Five years later NESRI continues it's partnership model with organizations like the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), Vermont Worker's Center (VWC) and Community Asset Development Redefining Education (CADRE) in Los Angeles empowering those directly affected by a variety of human rights issues.
