Freedom On Their Minds: The Legacy of and Path Still to Follow
of the Epoch Freedom Summer

A 2- Hour Building Bridges-Housing Notebook Special

Join us to commemorate, with brilliantly combined archival sound, interviews
and a soul-stirring musical score the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer,
an epic 10 weeks in 1964 that changed history.  Freedom Summer brought
together more than 1000 volunteers from around the country, who joined
organizers, poverty-stricken sharecroppers, maids and day-laborers, who
confronted jail, beatings and even murder for the right to vote.  In one of the
most concerted and forceful initiates to challenge white supremacy Mississippi
freedom summer activists signed up 80,000 members for the insurgent
Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to break the back of the apartheid-like
political structure of the state of Mississippi.  Freedom Summer attracted the
nation and federal government and helped transform the Voting Rights Act of
1965.  Freedom Summer’s participants believed they could change history –
and did.
