*********This event is tomorrow evening*********
To all:

I wanted to take this opportunity to share an important event taking place in New York City. Tomorrow, Saturday November 15th at the Kairos Center/Poverty Initiative at Union Theological Seminary will present a program featuring, Marian Kramer and Maureen Taylor of Michigan Welfare Rights Organization talking about the struggles for the human right to water in Detroit. Two African American women who have been on the front lines of social struggles in the US for almost half a century will detail the recent visit of UN Special Rapporteurs Catarina de Albuquerque and Leilani Farha. They will be joined by Jill Carr-Harris and Cheryl Foytlin who have been organizing around water and other environmental issues in India and the the Gulf Coast of the US respectively. This promises to be an informative evening. Hope you can attend. For more information or to RSVP click the link below.

In solidarity,
Rob

This past May, leaders from Kairos and the Poverty Initiative met with social movement leaders from around the world.

Toward a New Poor People's Campaign

Learning from struggles for the human right to water

November 15th, 6:30pm at Union Theological Seminary

Around the US and the world, the poor are taking action to secure our most fundamental human rights - including the right to water. Join us as we hold up these struggles and draw connections between them.

Speaking to us from their experiences and their struggles will be four leaders in the fight for human rights:

Maureen Taylor & Marian Kramer  have a long history of leadership in the fight for power, justice, and rights for poor people in Detroit and beyond. They'll be joining us as leaders in the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization, to share their experiences in the effort to realize the human right to water in Detroit and the surrounding area in the face of mass shut-offs and privatization schemes.

Jill Carr-Harris is a leader in Ekta Parishad, an organization of the rural poor in India based in over 8,000 villages around the country. They struggle for the right to livelihood resources - land, forest, and water.

Cherri Foytlin is a freelance journalist, author, speaker and mother of six, who lives in South Louisiana. Cherri is part of the core leadership team of the Bridge the Gulf Project, which brings together storytelling, community organizing, and new media to amplify Gulf Coast voices, stories, and perspective often overlooked by mainstream media.
