Hi all!

Seems like a good time to brainstorm ideas to kick off the New Year
with a bang. I feel like we've lost a bit of steam, but are still
pushing forward. We've seen a lot of great ideas in this group, so I'd
like to point out a couple that have stuck with me:

- Going through the We Are the 99% Tumblr to find healthcare related
stories, and either displaying them on the site or creating an Occupy
Healthcare Tumblr account.

-Creating materials that could be distributed in doctors offices,
community health centers, college campuses.

-Organizing "teach-ins" on healthcare issues.

-Coordinating with Occupy Wall Street health justice groups. (I know
of ones attached to Boston and NYC. There's probably others)

-Organizing Street Medic training/distributing materials

-Finding videos to include on the OHC youtube channel that was
created.

I think these are great ideas! I'm sure we can come up with more, and
figure out who's interested in doing what. I feel like it makes sense
to re-group, re-focus, and re-commit ourselves to the cause over the
next few months to see if we can build a larger movement. Using SM is
important, but I'm very interested in how our activities translate
into coordinated action and activism.

So- what do you all think our next steps should be?

I think we should focus on these if we can agree these ideas work. Let's pick two and really hit them hard with one goal to make noise awareness get some media attention either local or regional or national. Perhaps we create a poster to put up in the physician lounges of hospitals. Of course I know that the structure there could come down on whoever puts those up.

Teach-ins could be great but we need to do somewhere open and media hot. On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In front of the White House.

The point I am making not well is that we do one or two well and drive the message to the media.

NAACP is offering Project H.E.L.P. grants for health literacy and
healthcare awareness programs. They are offered in every area with
NAACP. We are aplying in my area. Below is an excerpt from the email I
received:

NAACP Health Department

Project H. E. L. P -Healthy Eating, Lifestyles and Physical Activity
Request for Proposal
Background
Issues like poor nutrition, limited physical activity, and elevated
obesity rates put the Black community at a considerable risk for long
term health challenges. According, to the Office of Minority Health,
obesity trends state that African Americans are 1.4 times more likely
to be obese than non-Hispanic whites. More alarming is the prevalence
of childhood obesity among African Americans, where 35.9 percent of
African American children are overweight or obese. These children are
at risk of being obese in their adulthood and developing serious
health consequences which includes chronic diseases. This generation
has been deemed the first that will NOT outlive their parents.
Program description
Addressing the issue of chronic diseases in the African American
community will require a comprehensive education and community
awareness program designed to address 1) healthy eating, 2) physical
activity and 3) chronic disease prevention. We have named our program
