Green Tip of the Month:
Take Advantage of The Warm Winter
By Susanna Redekop

Photo: Zora Ignjatovic
Indoor houseplants should be kept free of dust as to not clog their pores

We are having an incredibly unseasonably warm winter so far here in Toronto.  Whether
you're celebrating and enjoying the warmth, or fearing the atmospheric and climatic
consequences, this type of weather makes winter gardening more possible.

If the soil in your garden is workable (not frozen, but not too wet), you can turn
over the soil.  This breaks up the big clogs of dirt, and can also expose some of
the insect eggs to hungry birds and other c

ritters around.

You can also use the old branches of your discarded Christmas tree or wreaths to
mulch your garden.  When the branches decompose, they will break down and add nutrients
to your soil.  Add some compost along with the branches if you like to help the
process along.

Consider building your own ColdFrame [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=vmrl66dab&et=1109038486312&s=182&e=001LJpPd9w9UKtB1V4wHNYKhnLOfimDgV-S0I4WwpFSLxzluTi6XX1CKcAUTSpU_igdMW07mEYY_V8uheS44W7kOmXPG87HYF9K4L2exTckJcHMZ0tzTHnk6IgdOl_QT9qt1diZPqu0rmq4fQCdPVTuQQINZ8cIEI4d5NXRE6bKu7YD-dRAMSSC4Q==]
to keep growing in the soil throughout the colder months.

Indoor houseplants can use a bit of TLC too.  If you see your plants getting dusty,
clean them off with a damp cloth, spritz bottle, or run their leaves under a gentle
stream of tap water.  Dust can clog their pores, which doesn't let them breathe
as easily (just like us!).
