Occupy the Dream!
Look for the Occupy Detroit banner
We'll be marching together

Everyone involved in Occupy Detroit is encouraged to come out and participate in the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day rally and march on Monday, January 16, 2012. The event begins at noon at Central United Methodist Church, 23 East Adams at Woodward in Detroit.  Wear your "Occupy Detroit" patch if you have one, so that we can be visible within the group!
 ;
Central United Methodist Church has been solidly behind the 99% for decades and their MLK Day event has consistently been one of the largest grassroots commemorations of MLK Day in Michigan. This year’s MLK Day event honors the women of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). These women played an essential but underappreciated role in the Black Liberation Struggle in the US. As many folks know, SNCC was on the frontlines of the sit-in movement for desegregation, voter rights and many other struggles.

Martin Luther King Jr. is well known for his leadership against segregation and discrimination, but he was also an outspoken advocate for economic justice. Many of the things that King had to say on the subject of economic justice are as relevant today as they were when he said them. As Occupy Detroit advances the work of “restructuring the edifice” (to use King’s words) that produces extreme poverty and inequality, we are continuing King’s legacy.

The MLK Day rally and march is a chance for Occupy Detroit to support and learn about the struggle for justice, and make contributions of winter wear for the church’s Homeless Outreach Program.

True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.  -- The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
